The Elder’s personal evaluation • Calling • Holy Spirit equipped and prompted • Vows • Volunteer or conscript - Submissive • Selfless or mercenary - Servant heart • Exemplary or autocratic - Guide by example Mark 10:42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

  5. The ministry of the Elders • The Elders are responsible for God’s flock 1 Pet 5:2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers • They superintend and are accountable for God’s flock Heb 13:17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. • They thus direct the affairs of the church 1 Tim 5:17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church…. • Their responsibilities are like those of a shepherd Jer 3:15 Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.

  6. The ministry of the Elders • Being responsible, they will guide God’s flock purposefully John 10:3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. • The sheep recognise him as their leader and are prepared to follow him • How responsible Elders practically exercise guidance Accountable; Prayerful; Visionary; Strategic; Purposeful; Flexible; Pastoral Ps 23:3 He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
