  3. Please take a few minutes to complete the pre-test individually before we begin.

  4. Workshop Goals Participants will be able to: • Provide data on teacher’s life satisfaction compared to other U.S. occupations; • Provide realistic information about STEM and college faculty salaries; • Generally explain retirement options for teachers compared to private sector STEM jobs; • Provide accurate teacher retention data. Presenters will be able to: • Translate the participants perspective into effective messaging for recruiting math and science teachers.

  5. Math and Science Teaching Relative Demand by Field Considerable shortage (5.00 – 4.21) • Physics 4.59 • Spec. Ed. – Severe/Profound Disability 4.61 • Spec. Ed. – Visually Impaired 4.59 • Mathematics 4.49 • Chemistry 4.47 Inhighdemand 2018 AAEE (American Association of Employment in Education) Educator Supply and Demand in the United States Reports

  6. Math and Science TeachingHow interested are you in being a middle or high school teacher? 2017 POPA report – Recruiting teachers in high needs….

  7. Rate your life Best possible life (10) On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time? Worst possible life (0)

  8. Data Mining • Each group will receive 4 documents; each person should review 1 document silently. • After reviewing the documents, share your findings with the rest of the group. How Teachers Rate their Lives High School vs. College Teacher Salaries Salary by Major vs. teaching Loan Forgiveness and Retirement

  9. National Survey Top Best possible life (10) 7 or greater for Q1& 8 or greater on Q2 On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time? Q1 Middle The Cantril Self-Anchoring Scale† On which step do you think you will stand aboutfive years from now? Q2 4 or less for Q1 & Q2 Bottom Worst possible life (0)

  10. Did you know… Teachers in the United States rate their lives better than all other occupation groups, trailing only physicians. Percentageshown is the % of people ranking their lives at thetop of the ladder minus the % of people ranking their lives at the bottom of the ladder. https://news.gallup.com/poll/161516/teachers-love-lives-struggle-workplace.aspx

  11. Data mining question What do you and your neighbor think the percentage on the graph represents?

  12. Data Mining High School vs. College Teacher Salaries How Teachers Rate their Lives Salary by Major vs. teaching Loan Forgiveness and Retirement

  13. Teacher Salaries9 month contracts($45k annualized → $60k, $80k annualized → $107k)

  14. 7-12 Teaching vs. College

  15. Data mining question How does the path to becoming a college faculty member look compared to becoming a high school teacher? (consider time to permanent employment, advanced degrees, relocation, starting salaries, job availability, and job security)

  16. Data Mining Salary by Major vs. teaching How Teachers Rate their Lives High School vs. College Teacher Salaries Loan Forgiveness and Retirement

  17. Typical salaries of bachelor degree recipients, Class of 2015 Jericho UFSD, NY How do the salaries here compare to what you have heard your department’s graduates are receiving for their first position? Chandler Unified, AZ Note: All salaries shown are for 12 month positions except teaching.

  18. Data mining question How do the salaries here compare to what you have heard your department’s graduates are receiving for their first position?

  19. Data Mining Loan Forgiveness and Retirement How Teachers Rate their Lives High School vs. College Teacher Salaries Salary by Major vs. teaching

  20. FederalLoan & Grant Programs Direct/FFEL Forgiveness • $17,500 • 5 years of consecutive teaching • low income school TEACH Grants • $4,000/year Want to know more about Federal Student Aid?https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/

  21. Retirement Benefits Colorado schools offer PERA retirement benefits • Example: Begin teaching at 22 years old, full retirement benefits at 57 • 87.5% of highest annual income (e.g. a pension) • Yearly Annuity Value of $17,300 Yearly Annuity Value: Someone in industry would have to invest this amount at 7% ROR to have the same available retirement as a teacher’s pension based on average life expectancy

  22. Surprises? • What did your group find interesting or unexpected about your student’s career prospects?

  23. Teacher Retention What fraction of grade 7-12 teachers remain in the profession at year 5? • 28% • 41% • 59% • 78% • 90%

  24. Teacher Retention What fraction of grade 7-12 teachers remain in the profession at year 5? • 28% • 41% • 59% • 78% • 90% †2015 U.S. Dept. of Ed Public School Teacher Attrition and Mobility in the First Five Years: Results From the First Through Fifth Waves of the 2007–08 Beginning Teacher Longitudinal Study

  25. Curriculum Standards Discuss how you and your partner would teach the objective below: Chemistry - Matter & Its Interactions: Develop a model to illustrate that the release or absorption of energy from a chemical reaction system depends upon the changes in total bond energy. Physics - Forces & Interactions: Analyze data to support the claim that Newton’s second law of motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its acceleration. Math - Algebra: Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.

  26. Content Flexibility Do these standards appear to provide restrictive instructions how when, what, and/or how a teacher teaches? Grade 7-12 State, NGSS, and Common Core standards allow teachers flexibility in how they teach within their own classrooms.

  27. Teaching vs. Industry: the take-aways Discussions between teachers and industry professionals when asked to discuss the two careers: • Many teachers say the number one benefit to teaching is spending their summer and winter breaks with their kids. • Industry professionals shared that the uncertainty in their schedule makes planning family vacations challenging • Industry professionals were very surprised by teachers’ retirement benefits • Teachers often make $4 - $12K during the year coaching, tutoring, in-school subbing, etc.

  28. Typical salaries of bachelor degree recipients, Class of 2015 Jericho UFSD, NY Teaching is the only profession shown that is a 9-month contract. Chandler Unified, AZ

  29. Teaching vs. Industry: Salary & Retirement • Industry professionals suggested that when advertising salaries, the monetary value of the pension should be included. • Estimates Colorado Yearly Annuity Value at $17.3k (teachers typically contribute 3%) • Industry value at $6k/year (4% by each) • Suggestion to create a job offer comparison sheet

  30. Teaching vs. Industry Teaching Lockheed Martin Salary + Retirement Benefits • Year 1: $45K+ $16K* = $61K • Mid: $81K+$15K = $96K Contract • 9-month contract • 74 - 109 days not on contract • Retire late 50’s with 87.5% of HEI *3% employee contribution Salary + Retirement Benefits • Year 1: $67K + $3K* = $70K • Mid: $98K + $4K = $102K Contract • 12-month contract • 10 – 40 days off • Retire at 65 salary depends on market performance & life expectancy *4% employer contribution

  31. Teacher Reflection "We have done this to ourselves [teachers].  It's so important to keep pushing to improve teachers’ salaries and to stop districts from taking away from salaries; but, now look what we've done to the public's view of the profession.”  • Barbara Hickman, CDE
