  2. How do you connect to yourself? Describe the last time you were able to connect to yourself while being alone... • What were the surroundings like? • What could you hear? • What could you see? • What could you feel? • What were you actually engaged in?

  3. Mindfulness Mindfulness is being aware of or bringing attention to this moment in time, deliberately and without judging the experience. By reconnecting with the simple moments in life, by truly living moment by moment, it is possible to rediscover a sense of peace and enjoyment.

Benefits of Mindfulness • Increased experience of calm and relaxation • Higher Levels of energy and enthusiasm for living • Increased self-confidence and self-acceptance • Less danger of experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, addition or low immune efficiency • More self compassion and compassion for others and our planet

  5. 5 min mindfulness exercise Look around you for something to focus your attention on, a leaf on a tree, a stone, a flower, a creek, anything around you even a piece of furniture Focus all your attention on this object, observe every detail of it, it size, shape, color pattern, texture, sounds it could make, and even its smell . Try to wonder about how it came into being and how many people were involved in its creation...

  7. Empathize: To create meaningful innovations, you need to know your users and care about their lives. Observe: View users and their behavior in the context of their lives. As much as possible do observations in relevant contexts in addition to interviews. Engage: Sometimes we call this technique ‘interviewing’ but it should really feel more like a conversation. Prepare some questions you’d like to ask, but expect to let the conversation deviate from them. Keep the conversation only loosely bounded. Elicit stories from the people you talk to, and always ask “Why?” to uncover deeper meaning. Watch and Listen: Ask someone to show you how they complete a task. Have them physically go through the steps, and talk you through why they are doing what they do.

  9. Define: Framing the right problem is the only way to create the right solution Develop an understanding of the type of person you are designing for – your USER. Synthesize and select a limited set of NEEDS that you think are important to fulfill; you may in fact express a just one single salient need to address. Work to express INSIGHTS you developed through the synthesis of information your have gathered through empathy and research work. Then articulate a point-of-view by combining these three elements – user, need, and insight – as an actionable problem statement that will drive the rest of your design work.

  10. Ideate: It’s not about coming up with the ‘right’ idea, it’s about generating the broadest range of possibilities Prototype: Build to think and test to learn

  12. Using Design Process for Project Products Using the Design Process, you will “apply” for the project product you would like to work on. See this as a JOB APPLICATION. Mr. Olivas & Ms. Perro will read through your packets in order to create product teams. Applications that are thorough, thoughtful, and well-done will have a higher chance of getting their first choice product. • Select the Product you would like to work on • Identify which Essential Question this product connects to • Use the EMPATHIZE STEP in the Design Process to: • Identify who your product would serve, and how it would serve them (come up with at least 2 specific users) • Come up with a list of questions you’d like to ask your user in an Empathy Interview • Identify a Second Choice Product, and complete the same Empathy Step for that Product.
