  2. CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00Grid Status • UK PP Management Structure (Paul Jeffreys): • discussion on management structure :- Grid Project Director • likely finances & how organisation of funding • PPARC agenda is broader than HEP Grid • Important to communicate with UK HEP community => meetings • DataGrid (Robin Middleton) • some funded effort, “unfunded” effort needs to be organised • CNAP agreed: travel, funding to cover seeding period Jan-Apr 2001 • Summary of bids • decision on LHC JIF bid has been deferred (Steve Lloyd) • Networking (pp Peter Clarke) • early ftp studies • discussions with UKERNA re bandwidth requirements CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00

  3. CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00 Networking • SuperJanet • will be upgraded (Apr’01) • JISC HEFCE budget has been doubled by Further Education involvement; SR2000 could change this significantly again • GEANT (TEN-155 replacement) • under tender; used by DataGrid • US links • Improved peering to UK from ESNET since Apr’00 => much better performance • HEPTEL has been turned off • CDF dedicated link awaiting formal approval • Video-conferencing • UK testing of H323; vrvs can now use H323 • concern that CERN might drop ISDN CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00

  4. CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00Other reports I • External Factors affecting UK HEP computing (Steve Lloyd) • Hoffmann LHC Computing Review: panels finished, reports being produced • Spending Review: news still awaited (see Stop Press!) • Data Storage Sub-Group Status (Pete Renton) • robot usage grows: LHC has significant LHC data in robot; we are now over the HEP quota • Future plans tied up with Grid; may need to balance short-term against LHC • CDF are working on Grid (JIF-funded) initiative with mass-storage component • Jeffreys & Gordon to plan DataStore services over next year • GEANT4 collaboration & PPARC (Steve Lloyd) • all favour UK joining Geant4 board, but who should sign MoU? CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00

  5. CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00Other reports II • Central Facilities (Andy Sansum, Dave Salmon) • HP service due to close 31-Oct-00 (subset running till Xmas’00) • Linux service now 60 dual cpus (30-40 more dual procs soon) • NT Farm will close when LHCb has finished (Feb’01?) - CNAP agrees • CUF (Tim Adye) • System Managers (Bob Cranfield) • HTASC (Alan Flavell) • digital certificates main item • markup languages next topic • HEPCCC (Dave Kelsey) • discussing its future: perhaps reporting to ICFA rather and ECFA CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00

  6. CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00Other reports III • HEPNT (Dave Kelsey) • open body meeting at same time as HEPix • W2000 issues • co-ordination with Unix (Kerberos, etc) • CERN looking at single Linux/W2000 sign-on • Jefferson lab meeting early Nov’00 • HEPiX (John Gordon) • W2000 • Linux collaboration (CERN & FNAL independently certified the same product) • Fabric management session for very large clusters • Looking at ASIS replacement (esp. in view of Linux RPMs) • Training (Steve Fisher) • training updates to be announced in HI-phi • PPARC to be asked for £10k CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00

  7. Terms of Reference (I) • To advise the PPC on all aspects of computing and networking in support of the UK particle physics programme, monitoring and reporting on the existing status of and future trends and requirements in, CPU provision, data storage, networking, software/tools/environment, the needs of the theory community and of particular projects or experiments, and any related areas which may be specified by the PPC or the CNAP. CNAP meeting 13-Oct-00

  8. Terms of Reference (II) • To act as interface between users in the Institutes and the service providers of networking, data storage and computing power. It will liaise with CERN, DESY and other accelerator laboratories on these matters. • To report at least once a year to the PPC by means of an annual review of UK PP computing and networking along the lines of the White Book exercises, and containing prioritised recommendations, and to the wider community, for example through reports at the Town Meetings.
