Coursework Expectations Learners in this course are expected to: • Participate in discussions, complete in - class assignments and homework assignments • Complete a written science pre and post exam • Keep a personal notebook for notes, completing exercises and record reflections about their learning experiences in this course, (all of which are not assessed.) • Attendance is required at each session for the full 6 weeks. • Implement an inquiry based science lesson in your classroom

  5. Evaluation The participants WILL NOT BE assessed during the course with a grade. Feedback will be given during classroom discussions and assignmentsas means to clarify and solidify their understandings; teachers will be encouraged to keep a reflective journal of their learning experiences. A written pre and post test will be given at the beginning and the end of the course for individuals to confidentially measure how much they have learned in the content areas of Science. Learners will receive a certificate of completion for the course and 18 Professional Development hours. 18 Hours of PD

Learner Objectives • Describe how science and scientists follow processes of systematically making observations, asking questions, making predictions, taking measurements, collecting data, and coming to decisions based on evidence. • Describe how scientific knowledge changes in the light of new evidence or interpretation of data. • Identify ways to bring the scientific process into the classroom as a teaching and learning tool. • Recognize that science is not a linear process (list of steps to follow) but is very complex.

  10. Part 1: What is the Nature of Science?? Task 1: STUDENT ACTIVITY: The Extra Piece • Each of the pieces you received in your envelope represent current scientific data. • Arrange the pieces into a square. • A new scientific discovery has been made • Incorporate this new information into your tangram.

  12. Part 1: What is the Nature of Science?? Task 2: STUDENT ACTIVITY: Mystery Powders • “I was getting ready to bake the other day and I measured several types of white powder. I received a Twitter message and went to check it. When I returned to the kitchen I realized I had neglected to label the 4 powders and now I have FOUR“mystery powder” batches. What can I do to correctly identify and distinguish between Powder 1, Powder 2, Powder 3 and Powder 4 without tasting them? “ • Write a prediction to identify what you think each white powder is • Write an explanation for how you would identify each of the powders first. • If you need to revise or add to your explanations from steps 1 and 2, do so. At the table in front are some materials provided to help you. • NOW EXPERIMENT!! • Record data (observations) for each test. • Make your final conclusions about what each white powder is.

If you were scientists, would you be prepared to publish your findings in an academic journal, present them at a prestigious conference or stake your reputation and careers on your findings? 2.
