  2. Have a great idea for an invention. • I am trying to solve the problem of ice on the ground after it snows. • There is usually a layer of ice after it snows that could cause you to slip. • This problem impacts people in my neighborhood often. • I will try to help solve this problem by inventing a shovel that can break through ice. • My invention will be sharp enough to break through the ice.

  3. Investigate inventions and ideas of the past. • Ice scrapers have been invented to help solve this problem. Ice scrapers are used to scrape the ice of the ground. • I plan on making my invention more sharp so that it can really remove and break all of the ice.

  4. Draw pictures and diagrams to show your invention and how it might work. Here is a diagram showing how my invention will work.

  5. Build your prototype or model of your invention. • My prototype requires a wooden stick, felt (handle grip), aluminum foil, styrofoam, and wood glue. How to build the Icebreaker: • Cut the piece of styrofoam. • Attach the wooden stick to the styrofoam with glue. • Wrap aluminum foil around the handle to create a grip. • Wrap the felt around your aluminum foil to create a comfortable grip. • Secure the felt with glue so it stays on.

  6. My invention. (Prototype) The end part of the shovel that I will first use to test my invention. Then I will add on if it works.

  7. Test your invention. Tests: • Take the shovel and hit it against the ice in my freezer to see what happens. • After it snows use the shovel on ice outside after it snows. I tested my prototype using the first test and the ice created a dent in the styrofoam and the ice didn’t break.

  8. Keep improving your invention. • To improve my invention I plan on changing the shape of the styrofoam into a more pointed V shape. • I find that this shape of the styrofoam works better than the other version. Finished Prototype:

  9. Market your invention to peoplewho might buy it. The Ice Breaker • People should buy the Icebreaker because it could be really helpful for everyone. • Breaking the ice could cause less people to slip and fall on the ground. • No more having to worry about slipping, especially if you are a clumsy type of person!
