Prior Knowledge • What is Contrast? • What are some facts about the artist Chuck Close? • How would you describe Chuck Close’s style? • Contrast is a large difference between two things; for example, light and shadow. • Some facts about the artist Chuck Close are: he was both physically and learning disabled, he didn’t believe using a photograph as “cheating”. • Chuck Close’s style is pop art/realistic where he uses grids and color value techniques.

  3. Lesson Objectives/Purpose • Show an understanding and awareness of the work of Chuck Close. Understand how an artist gets ideas. • Use ruler skills in creating a grid - develop skills in enlarging a composition using a grid. Study proportion. • Recognize values and create values using line, color, pattern and simulated textures. Develop Contrast through values. Plus this lesson is for you to have fun!

  5. Step One • Find a 5x7 colored picture of a face with high contrast.

  6. Step Two • Create a grid of ¼ inch size squares across/on top of your photo with a black sharpie.

  7. Step Three • Create a grid 10 x 14 of ½ inch size squares on large sheet of paper using a pencil.

  8. Step Four • Draw the face from the selected image in the squares using the grid as a guide. • Pay attention to proportions and facial features.

  9. Step Five • Create Color Value scale with seven 1 inch squares corresponding to the values in your original photo.

  10. Step Six • Using your color scale and original photo, create Chuck Close style portrait square by square.
