  1. Preparing Your First Presentations

  2. The Basics • Not like writing a paper • No one will read it • Will only be listened to • Need to write in simple, easy to follow language • Need to clearly signpost • Need to speak slowly yet passionately to convey your interest.

  3. The Basics • Prepared portion= 4 minutes • Equivalent of 2- 2 ¼ pages, times new roman, normal margins, double spaced • Print it just on two pages so you don’t have to flip pages in the middle • Each person should speak at least 2 times but no more than three times • Start with quote? • ATDQ (Answer the darn question!!!!!) • Read it carefully and answer all parts fully • Generally that should be 1/3 of the presentation on each portion- there are exceptions though

  4. Hot Seat • 6 minutes long • Listening is essential • Need to hear and understand the questions clearly- this can be more challenging than it sounds • ATDQs again!! • Need to work as a team by building off of each other or politely disagreeing • Participation should be roughly equal • No one should dominate and no one should be left out

  5. Dos • Use professional language • Say “It’s important to note…” or something along those lines • Make eye-contact with judges • Be energetic and excited • Show confidence • Be concise • Answer almost every question • Cite your sources • Synthesize- why does it matter • Show depth of knowledge • Make sure court cases are relevant • Connect to philosophers and founders • Use the textbook as a foundation • Slow down and enunciate • Answer the question!!!

  6. Don’ts • Say “I think” • Panic • Drop empty names, events, facts • Ramble • Stray from the question • Include filler

  7. This Week • Grade will be primarily based on: • Written presentation • ATDQ • Clarity/ Signposts • Length read at a moderate speed

  8. This Week • Grade will be primarily based on: • Hot Seat • Presentation skills • Eye contact • Voice modulation • Gestures • Posture • No filler words • Professional language • Participation • At least one relevant example to back up point • Unit with the best score wins a prize (what could it be???)
