Overview of Organization • St. John hospital initiated by Sister s of St. Joseph. • Initiated as 250 bed facility ; 70 associates. • 2013: 5,036 associates 1300 member medical staff. • Many specialty area s including a newly developed orthopedic program. • The mission statement of “St. John Providence Health System, as a Catholic health ministry, is committed to providing spiritually centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals in the communities we serve, with special attention to the poor and vulnerable”

  4. Background Director • Sue Mooney Smith Director of the Medical Surgical division. • Transferred from Northshores to St. John Hospital. She was the Director of Clinical Services. • BSN, MBA, HNB-BC

  5. Practicum Overview • Develop strategic plans to increase hip & knee patient admissions: • Educational programming • Spa amenities • Team building • Coordination of Care (pre-surgical to discharge)

  6. Practicum Objectives • Learn to develop effective educational program for elective hip and knee patients. • Learn and use team building strategies to develop the hip and knee program. • Understand how the educational session will effect patient satisfaction and outcomes. • Explore al facets of financial leadership including accountability, variance analysis, cost, quality services, and operational efficiency.

Practicum Objectives Cont. • Learn how to move from a manager to leader: • Develop speaking skills that is needed in leadership also allows one to master teaching in an open forum. • Be more effective by applying insights of assessment to improve leadership skills. • Personal growth in leadership principles. • Development in strategic planning.

  8. Lessons Learned • The basic components of strategic management and how to apply them to the development of the program. • The concepts of organization communication and how to apply it as an avenue of change. • Strategic plans and innovative ideas can be blocked or delayed by the organizations culture . • The majority of the patients are not attending the educational session because they don’t see the value but those who attend find the sessions beneficial. • Patients participate actively in their treatment when they understand what to expect both from the surgery and post surgical treatment perspective.
