  1. The Sun Also Rises: Love By: Jordana Diamond & Jordana Kono

  2. What exactly is Love? • a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person • a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection • Consideration and respect for another person

  3. Robert Cohn • Cohn doesn't believe in love. Rather, he needs security and finds it when being with women. He married his first wife for confidence, not love. The marriage did not result in happiness. Then, when being with Frances, he was never happy and never loved her. He felt comfortable and secured by being with a strong woman. Again though, he did not live happily with her either. Now, with Brett, Cohn is infatuated but not in love. He does not have the ability to love a woman.

  4. Brett • Brett is a confused and miserable woman. She loves Jake, but cannot be with him. Therefore, she tries to substitute him with men to take her mind off of Jake. These tactics to do not work because her and Jake are friends and always together. If Jake wasn't impotent, chances are that Brett would be with Jake. However, a life without sex in Brett's mind isn't acceptable and therefore, love is not so important.

  5. Jakes Barnes • During World War I, Jake became important. He lost all ability to have sex, and this drives Brett away from being in a relationship with him. This injury also impacts his masculinity because he feels as if he has lost his manliness. Jake loves Brett, but knows they can not be together because her lack of commitment and unwillingness to give up sexual relations.

  6. Love • Within the novel there is no real love. Many people go through life without experiencing or showing love. The Lost Generation are sad and hopeless and therefore love isn't a priority. Rather, they are expatriates trying to find a new home. This seems to be a better thing to strive for than finding a companion to love. Alcohol and parties fill the void where love should be and arrest their development.
