  3. About William Golding -Lived 19 September 1911 – 19 June 1993 -Served in WWII in the Royal Navy aboard a destroyer. Also commanded a landing ship at the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. -Married to analytical Chemist, Ann Brookfield -Raised by his father, another scientist (also socialist who advocated Science-inspired rationalism)

  4. About William Golding -Was well educated (attended Oxford University in 1930) in Science, art, and literature. (Knowledge of human evolution and human psychology is shown distinctly in LOTF) -

Plot Overview • During a major war, a British passenger plane is shot down onto a deserted island • The only survivors are a small group of young boys • They are forced to fend for themselves in order to survive • They divide into groups to work on different tasks, but these groups lead to conflict • The boys believe there is a monster on the island • The boys begin to feud over who their leader should be

Characters Ralph- The leader, represents civilizing instinct Jack - Leader of the hunters, represents savagery Piggy - Innovative, represents the rational side of civilization, allied with Ralph Simon - Shy, quiet, represents natural goodness Roger - Cruel, powerful, allied with Jack Sam and Eric - “Samneric”, always together

Psychology! • Freud believed that there were three parts to the mind • The Id controls basic human desires and is what is in humans that makes them animalistic • The Superego is our conscience which controls our morality • The Ego is what mediates between the two, balancing basic desires and higher morals
