  2. Overview • Preparations to write proposal • Proposal Outline • - Title • - Executive Summary • - Project Narrative • - Attachments • - Budget • Impact

  3. Preparations to write proposal Types of Proposals: • Pre-proposals- sponsor decides if full proposal is warranted • Continuation or Non-competing • Renewal (usually competitive)-request for continued support of • an existing project. • Standard projects • Special Emphasis projects • Conferences

  4. Proposal Outline • Title • Executive summary • Project narrative • - Justification •             - Objectives •             - Material and methods •             - Pitfalls that might be encountered and possible solutions • - Limitations to proposed procedures, methodologies, • or approaches • - Literature Review: relevant to the effort being proposed • - Current Work: preliminary research supporting proposal • - Equipment and Facilities • - Project Timetable

  5. Proposal Outline contd.. • Attachments: • Forms (List of Pathogens/Human/Animal Subjects forms) • http://ehs.uark.edu/FormsPage.aspx • Biosketch/Vitae • List of publications (bibliography) • Current and Pending • Conflict of Interest • Letters of support from collaborators • Budget and budget narrative.

  6. Proposal Outline Executive summary • Title(comprehensive, must adhere to word/character limit) • Ex: Electrostatic Spray Mediated Control of Foodborne Bacterial Pathogens • by Grape Seed Extract and Malic Acid on Poultry Meat • A brief introduction (1-2 lines). • Summarize the objectives of the proposal in the same order • presented • Procedures • Impact • Identification of specific scope of projects: • Research, Education, Extension etc. • Identification of priority areas • - Food Safety, Processing, Extension.

  7. Proposal Outline Project narrative • Justification • Identification of the priority area(s) addressed in the application • Estimates of the magnitude of the problem/issues in the related area – Statistics. • Rationale and need for conducting research to address issue • Outcomes and significance of proposed approach

  8. Proposal Outline Project narrative contd.. • Objectives • Clear, concise, complete, and logically arranged statement(s) • of specific aims of the proposed effort. Example: (Title of proposal: Electrostatic Spray Mediated Control of Foodborne Bacterial Pathogens by Grape Seed Extract and Malic Acid on Poultry Meat). Objectives: 1. Investigate the effect of GSE and MA and optimize their concentrations for maximum inhibition against S.T., L.m., and C.j. 2. Investigate the effect of electrostatic spraying of GSE and MA on the inhibition/killing of S.T., L.m., and C.j. inoculated on the surface of cooked and non-cooked chicken stored at 4 oC. 3. Conduct food safety education, extension and outreach activities concerning results obtained from this research targeting pathogen reduction/elimination in poultry products and processing plants using above methods.

  9. Proposal Outline Project narrative contd.. • Methods • Procedures, techniques, methods, or approaches including their feasibility • Means by which data will be analyzed or interpreted • Kinds of results or expected outcomes • Details of plans to communicate results to industry/stakeholders • Pitfalls that might be encountered and possible solutions • Limitations to proposed procedures, techniques, methodologies, or approaches.

  10. Proposal Outline Project narrative contd.. • Literature Review • A summary of contents in pertinent publications related to the proposal . (What has been done) • Emphasis on their relationship to the effort being proposed. (What needs to be done) • All important and recent publications from other institutions as well as those from the applicant institution. • Accurate, complete citations in an acceptable journal format.

  11. Proposal Outline Project narrative contd.. • Current Work/preliminary research • Relevant unpublished institutional activities. • Figures/tables/charts should stand-alone, and represent actual data pertaining to proposed research.

  12. Proposal Outline Project narrative contd.. • Equipment and Facilities • All facilities which are available for use or assignment to the • project during the requested period of support. • Any potentially hazardous materials, procedures, situations, or activities, along with an outline of the precautions to be exercised. • Examples: Work with pathogenic organisms, toxic chemicals and • experiments that may put human subjects or animals at risk. • All items of major instrumentation available for use or assignment to the proposed project should be itemized.

  13. Proposal Outline Project narrative contd.. • Project Timetable • Outline all important phases as a function of time, year by • year, for the entire project, including periods beyond the • grant funding period.

  14. Proposal Outline Attachments • Cooperation and Institutional Units Involved. • Appendices to Project Narrative: Only as supporting data. • Co-PIs • Collaborative Arrangements. • Collaborator’s Vitae/Biosketch, List of publications, • Letters of support (collaborators), Current and Pending, • Conflict of Interest.

  15. Proposal Outline Budget • Costs should not be over or under-estimated • Justify the following: • Does the budget match the proposed goals and methods ? • Can the researcher conduct the project within the proposed • budget ? • Provide a budget narrative/justification for the entire period of • the proposed research. • Ref: http://www.uark.edu/admin/aes/pdf_files/usdaforms.pdf pp31.
