What is Diwali? • Diwali is recognised as ‘The Festival of Light’. • ‘The Festivals of Light’ means ‘Row of Lamps’. • Diwali is one of the main festivals that Indians celebrate. • Diwali is also known as Deepavali or Divali • Diwali is celebrate to signify the pride of good or evil. And welcome the God Lakshmi who is the Goddess of Wealth to your home.
When is Diwali? Diwali is celebrated in mid-October or early November. What are the various religions behind the Diwali Festival? There are lots of religions behind the Diwali festival but the two main ones are Hinduism and Sikhism. Golden Sikh Temple
Why is Diwali celebrate in India? Guru Hargobind Singh Ji Hindus celebrate Diwali because their God, Lord Vishnu saved his wife God Lakshmi from the king Bali’s prison. And the Sikh celebrate Diwali because their sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Singh Ji was realised from prison with the other 52 kings. Lord Vishnu and God Lakshmi
How is Diwali celebrated? Diwali is celebrated by preying, going to Sikh Temples or doing a puja to your God and thanking them for this lovely day. Then all your relatives, friends, neighbours and families get together and share sweets and give out gifts to each other and congratulate for this festival. Then they make special and delicious food for lunch. When it is about 5pm they start making little lamps which are called ‘diyas’ to put around their home, also clean their house and make Rangolis on the ground. Then when it is 7pm Indian ladies get the diyas and put oil in them, light them up and put them all around their home. And also open their doors and windows to welcome God Lakshmi to your home. After that they all go outside and play with the fireworks and celebrate the Diwali festival. Rangoli Diyas
Comparing the Diwali in ‘Indian’ and in ‘New Zealand’… Indians living in New Zealand celebrate diwali by preying, going to Sikh Temples or doing a puja at home. Then they invite their friends, families and relatives to their home and share sweets and celebrated the Diwali festival. They make special foods. Then the buy the diyas unlike making them and clean their homes. At about 7pm they light the diyas put them outside and also open the doors and windows to welcome the God Lakshmi to your home. Then they go out side and play with the fireworks.
