Vocabulary Terms • Renaissance- rebirth • Utopia- plans for creating a more perfect society • Transcend- to rise above or go beyond • Intuition- a quick or dedicated insight / gut instinct • Idealist- person who believes that human perfectibility can be attained • Optimism- the tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome / being positive or looking at the bright side of things

  4. Read American Renaissance introduction (pages 206-214) and complete crossword puzzle with the corresponding answers.

  5. Reflect on yourself (back of worksheet): • Do you see yourself more as a Transcendentalist with an optimistic view of human perfectibility? Or do you view yourself more as a Dark Romantic, believing that the world has a dark side that cannot be ignored? • Write down your opinions of these ideas and how you view yourself in relation to them. • (Prompt: Page 213)
