Rebels associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes • Al-Qaeda: followers of Osama bin Laden mostly from Saudi Arabia (along with other Arab nations) • Reasons: • Retaliation with Israel • Involvement in Persian Gulf War • Military presence in Middle East • Some of the terrorists had lived in the United States for over one year • Strategically planned this out • Hijacked four planes leaving from airports in the east coast to California. • Why California? What Happened Two of the four airplanes hit the World Trade Center buildings (Twin Towers) The third plane hit the US Pentagon The fourth plane was intended to hit either the White House or the Capitol building but crashed in a field in Pennsylvania 8:45- hit north tower 9:45- hit the pentagon 10:00- hit the south tower 10:10- hit the field in Pennsylvania Only took 30 minutes for the south tower to completely burn
