Fox Trap. What happened to the moose trap?. It’s way to big! We would not be able to get into into our boat/sled with the rest of our gear. It would not cost less the ammunition. It is not how we normally hunt moose. Problem and Possible Solutions. Problem:

  2. What happened to the moose trap? • It’s way to big! • We would not be able to get into into our boat/sled with the rest of our gear. • It would not cost less the ammunition. • It is not how we normally hunt moose.

  3. Problem and Possible Solutions • Problem: • Out in the villages the cost of ammunition is expensiveso we need to find a way more cost effective way to hunt for a fox. • Possible Solutions: • As a group create and explain how a trap would be a more cost effective way catch a fox.

  5. Supplies to make the trap: • Net • A shovel to dig a whole • Bait-mouse/small bird • Leaves/grass to cover the net and the hole

  7. How does our trap work? • Dig a hole in the ground • Place net over the hole • Cover the net with leaves, grass, plants • Put meat on the covered net • The fox will walk on the net to get the meat and fall in the hole

  8. Advantages and Disadvantages • Advantage • The cost was low • Could be used over and over • Not heavy • Disadvantages • May take lots of time to set up (digging a whole) • The fox may escape

How does our trap work? • Find an area with trees • Tie trap to a rope • Put meat on the ground • One person hold the rope so the trap is in the air • When the fox comes to get the meat let go of the rope and it will trap the fox • We will kill it by using poison because we will only use it for the fur

Advantages and Disadvantages • Advantage • Could be used over and over • The fox would not be able to escape once we caught it • We could change it easily • We would not have to check it all the time • Disadvantages • Could take lots of time make • The fox may be faster than we can drop the trap • We would have to wait for the fox to come

  17. How does our trap work? • Place meat in the trap • Cover the trap with leaves, grass, plants to trick the fox • Tie a rope to the lid • One person holds the lid open behind the trap • When the fox goes in to get the meat drop the lid

  18. Advantages and Disadvantages • Advantage • Could be used over and over • The fox traps itself • It is easy to hide • Disadvantages • It is the most expensive to build • We couldn’t leave it and go

Steps the Groups Took • Step 1: Define the problem • Step 2: gather information about foxes to • Size, where they live, what they eat • Step3: brainstorm and decide what type of trap would be used • Explore other types of traps we use • Step 4: Explore “how to” paper • Orally explaining the steps of a pb&j sandwich as an exampel • Step 4: explain the steps of how the trap would work • Questioning to guide them towards explaining step by step • Step 4: calculate the cost of our trap • Step 5: create a model of our trap using classroom materials

  20. Reflection As a whole class this project allowed the students to think creatively and come up with a solution that they created. This project allowed the students to explain their thinking both in writing and orally, all students are either in their first or second year of receiving instruction in English. All groups could easily say what kind of trap, but they struggled to explain step by step on how the trapped work. To help with this students worked on answering questions as a group to guide them to explaining how their trap would work. Students worked in three groups for the most part they worked extremely hard on the project. They worked together to solve the problem and helped each other understand each others thinking. If I had the chance to do this project again with my students I would give them more time to create the model of the project. Also I would have had them create the model first, in hopes that they could better explain the steps since they would have had it in front of them.
