  1. EXTREME CLIMATE PHENOMENA IN BULGARIA

  2. Extreme Climate Phenomena in Bulgaria FACTS *The XXth century has marked the biggest increase in air temperatures in the last 1000 years.* Annual rainfall has been increasing in most regions of Bulgaria since the 90s.*Drought periods were the longest in the 40s and in the last two decades of the 20th century. The longest periods of drought were suffered in 1945 and 2000.* The average annual temperature in 2009 in Bulgaria was by 1.2 degrees higher than the climate norm. This is a 12th year in a row with temperatures higher than the typical country norm. * Occurrence of extreme weather and climate phenomena has increased in recent years.

  3. EXAMPLES Snow in the middle of April. A similar phenomena startled not only Bulgaria but also our South neighbour country - Turkey. Spring has been slow in coming in Moscow, too. The daily temperatures here don’t go above 8°C and fall below 0°C during the night, which is lower by several degrees than the seasonal norm. In 2007 the rainfall station measured the record of 291 l/ sq.m. in the village of TzarKaloyan. Detailed expertise had to be done because of the 8 flood victims.

  4. Schemes This scheme shows the difference between summer temperatures 20 years ago and now. Air temperature anomalies in Bulgaria for the period 1961-1990. red-positive anomaly of the average annual temperature against the climate norm of the period 1961-1990.blue -negative anomaly of the average annual temperature against the climate norm of the period 1961-1990 .green –filter determining the anomaly variations of the average annual temperature.

  5. Extreme Climate Phenomena 2009 is one of the ten hottest years and the 2000–2009 decade is warmer than the previous one (1990–1999 г.), which in its turn is warmer than the previous decade (1980–1989 г.). Extreme climate phenomena in recent years – the record number of hurricanes, floods and droughts.

  6. The scheme shows the places where the temperature has been the highest and the lowest. The darkest red indicates the highest temperatures; light yellow – the lowest.
