  3. The Big Data Passenger Density in buses between various destinations. Profile information of passengers. Bus route/schedule.

  4. Purpose of System Using real time data to aid on-the-spot decision making. Entertain/Occupy people waiting at bus shelters. Impart a sense of comfort to people.

  5. Research Focus How do people make decision for taking the bus? How people spend time waiting at bus shelters? What do people fear the most at bus shelters?

  6. Existing concepts Concept by SENSEable City Lab of MIT. Solar-powered bus booths. Touchscreen displays that will display information like bus schedules/shortest route for a destination. Web browsing, Community message boards. http://www.tuvie.com/eyestops-futuristic-bus-stops-from-senseable-city-lab-of-mit/

  7. Existing concepts Concept by IKEA Transformed bus stops into miniature living rooms centred around a plush sofa. Designtaxi.com

  8. Existing concepts Concept by Umea Energy Umeå, a town about 300 miles north of Stockholm, gets four hours of light in the depths of the winter months. The company replaced billboards with overhead light therapy panels at 30 bus stops around the town. Fastcoexist.com

  9. Existing concepts Bus shelters in Australia promoted the show Big Brother. Bluetooth transmitters sent text messages to people nearby. The first read, "I’m watching u," and gave the recipient's location. The second, 30-40 seconds later, read, "Big Brother is back. 7 PM weeknights on TEN." Adweek.com

  10. Existing concepts Yahoo! pitted San Francisco neighborhoods against each other. 72-inch interactive touch screens at 20 bus stops. Challenged people to play against crosstown rivals in live head-to-head social games. Adweek.com

  11. Existing concepts Used eye-tracking camera When it sensed someone was looking at it, it changed the image from marital violence to marital harmony. "It happens when nobody is watching," says the headline. Adweek.com

  14. Good Bus Shelter - Basics Comfort & Convenience A place to sit, protection from weather, and a feeling of safety and security.

  15. Good Bus Shelter - Basics Information Route/Schedule Approaching buses

  16. Crime Related Factors Abundance of negative environmental attributes. General lack of ‘defensible space’ elements. Defensible spaces Territoriality Natural surveillance Proper location Possibility of surveillance discourages potential criminals. Signs of dereliction and incivility contribute to higher incidence of crime. Serious crimes take place mostly at night when there is little pedestrian presence. Crime are related to intensity of activity on street. Vulnerability; Women, children and elderly are the most fearful of bus stop settings. -

  17. Categories of counter measures [Hartgen et al, 1993] More security and patrol Use of technology( surveillance cameras, radio contacts, emergency systems on vehicles, etc.) Better information( posters, media campaigns, helplines, etc.) Design actions (better lighting, recessed walls, platform layouts that increase visibility) http://www.pps.org/reference/busshelters/

  18. Customer Information Systems Signage Route and schedule information Electronic message boards (real time data)
