Born- January 19, 1807 in Westmorland County, Virginia into a poor family • One out of 7 children • Parents- Harry “Light Horse” Lee and Anne Carter Lee • Never saw dad since age six • His dad fought in the Revolutionary War • His dad died when he was 11 • Was a good student in school • Math was his favorite subject Early Life

Finished school in 1823, decided to become a soldier, like his dad • At age 18, he entered the U.S Military Academy at Westpoint, NY, and began life there in June,1825 • Was a good cadet, and never got a demerit • Graduated his 2nd class in June, 1825 • Helped build Fort Pulaski, on Cockspur Island, a swampy island near Savannah, GA • 1841, was sent to Fort Hamilton, in Brooklyn, NY • Was in charge of repairing forts, guarding NY Harbor • Fought against Mexico (1846-1848) Military Life

  4. Married Mary Anne Randolph Custis, on June 30th , 1834 • She was a distant relative • Had 3 boys and 4 girls • On October 2nd , 1865 became president of Washington College • Died on October 12th , 1870 Adulthood
