The Art Song • Great poetic activity during the nineteenth century • English: Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, etc. • German: Goethe, Heine, Eichendorff, etc. • Poets viewed music as the purest of the arts • Strong bond between music and poetry • Music intensifies poetic sentiments • Expresses emotions without words • Art Song: Song for solo voice and piano accompaniment, with high artistic aspirations • Lied (pl. Lieder): German for “song” • Art Song most intensely cultivated in German-speaking lands

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) “When one has a good poem, the music comes easily, melodies just flow, so that composing is a real joy.” • Born in Vienna • Early musical talents • Composed over 600 Lieder • Lived a Bohemian life • Music performed at “Schubertiads” • Musical gatherings where only Schubert’s music was performed • Song cycle: A collection of several songs united by a common theme or literary idea • Also composed symphonies, piano sonatas, and operas

Erlkönig (Elf King) • Schubert’s most famous Lied, composed when he was 17 • Text by Goethe (1749-1832) • Dramatic tale of horror • Contrasts passages of narration and dialogue • Form: through-composed • Musical characterization: • Piano accompaniment suggests the galloping horse • Elf king sings seductively • Terrified boy sings in upper range with chromatic inflections • Father sings in a lower, reassuring range

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) • Born into a family of Literature • Best works are miniature compositions, such as short piano works and Lieder • Studied piano with Friedrich Wieck, and fell in love with his daughter Clara • Married Clara in 1840 • Permanently damaged his right hand • Turned his attention to music criticism and composition • “Du Ring an meinem Finger” (1840) • Rondo form • Text from German Romantic poet Adelbert von Chamisso

Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1886) • One of the great piano virtuosos of the nineteenth century • Was an international star when she married Robert • Most productive composition period was in her early years of marriage • “Liebst du um Schönheit” (1841) • Four stanza love poem by Joseph Eichendorff • Modified strophic form: The music of each stanza changes slightly from one to the next
