Key Facts of the South African Apartheid • The South African lasted between 1948-1994 • In 1934, white South Africans gained partial independence from Great Britain; this lead to the apartheid • The definition of apartheid is a system or practice that separates people according to race or color • Whites were the minority in South Africa • Although many of the leaders were against violence, it played a large role in the apartheid with numerous riots • Nelson Mandela and FW Clerk (S. Africa’s previous president) were prominent figures in ending apartheid
Key Facts of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement • Took place nearly 100 years after the abolishment of slavery • Mainly took place between 1955-1965 • ended segregation publicly and legally • Jim Crow laws designated the use of many places such as parks, schools, and restaurants for 'whites only' or for 'coloreds’ • Conducted peaceful demonstrations to get their point across, such as sit-ins, marches, and protests. • Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, & Malcolm X were prominent figures in ending segregation
