  2. Protagonist/Antagonist Protagonist- The main character in a narrative or drama Antagonist- The character or force that is in conflict with the protagonist in a narrative

  3. Flat/Round Round Character- A complex character who has depth through a variety of traits and many sides to his personality (protagonists & antagonists, typically) Flat Character- A character who is not highly developed and may only have one personality trait (minor or supporting characters)

  4. Static/Dynamic Dynamic Character - A character who undergoes a change (usually internal) as the plot unfolds (protagonist, typically) Static Character - A character who remains the same throughout the story (supporting characters, typically)

  5. Foil and Motivation • Foil- A character whose attributes, qualities, personality and/or attitude is opposite of the qualities, personality and/or attitude of another character. • emphasizes the characteristics of another character • Think Cinderella and the evil stepsisters • Motivation of Character- The reason why a character may think or act like he/she does in the story

  6. Direct/Indirect Characterization • Direct Characterization -The author directly tells the reader exactly what the character is like • Example: The boy was stubborn and bad-mannered. • Indirect Characterization - A method of characterization in which an author SHOWS what a character looks like, does, thinks and says and how other characters react to him or her (STEAL); it is up to the reader to draw conclusions about the character based on this indirect information • Example: The little boy bit his sister when she refused to share her toys.
