  1. Topic 1: Archetypes Tangent: The Powerpoint

  2. You Know What An Archetype Is • ar·che·type/ˈärk(i)ˌtīp/ • A very typical example of a certain person or thing. • An original that has been imitated. • The Hero Cycle • Aka A Bunch Of Different Archetypes That Are Also One Big Archetype When Assembled Together

  3. You Might Not Know What a Trope Is • trope/trōp/ • A figurative or metaphorical use of a word or expression. • Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. (TVTropes)

  4. You Look Familiar…

  5. The Obi-Wan • A mentor who travels with the main character and often has some sort of magic powers or at least a brilliant mind. Even though this character is better skilled, faster and more experienced than the protagonist, they aren't The Hero, either because they are not The Chosen One or because they have already grown too old for the task. Their role is to introduce a new skill or sharpen the current skills of the protagonist, often hoping to pass the torch because they know their career is coming to an end. Expect him to have a very calm attitude as if he has wisdom that he will give out in his own due time. • This character will almost alwaysdie so that the protagonist can learn to stand on his own two feet. Their death will also be a great motivator as it gives the protagonists a chance for vengeance. Afterwards, they'll usually become a Spirit Advisor, either as a literal "spirit" or in flashbacks. If they don't die, they will stick around giving advice, but not actively adventuring (unless Gondor Calls for Aid). • TL;DR: MENTORS WHO EXIST TO TEACH THE PROTAGONIST AND THEN DIE (OR GO AWAY) IN ORDER TO HELP THEM DEVELOP. • (Fun fact: all those underlined bits lead to different tropes.)

  6. TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life • Character is attacked because the attackers thought he had a weapon when he actually didn’t ? Shoot Him, He Has A Wallet. • The heroic speech given in response to the villain claiming that all humans are weak and useless? Patrick Stewart Speech. • Background percussion music used during dramatic reveals? Drum Roll Please. • Exaggerating a character trait to the point where that trait becomes the character? Flanderization. • That teen movie girl who everyone says is ugly even though in real life she’s a supermodel? Hollywood Homely. • Two characters switching bodies with each other? Freaky Friday Flip. • Talking parrots? Polly Wants a Microphone. • Counting to three? …Counting To Three. • The list goes on!

  7. The Archetype Challenge • EXAMPLE: • Setting: Ye Olde Nuclear Silo • Protagonist: Technical Pacifist • Antagonist: Glory Hound • Plot: Bring It Back Alive • Device: Shock Collar • Write a short scene – 500-700 words – that incorporates all five tropes. We’ll do some peer review of these pieces next class – if you don't manage to finish yours, then come prepared to critique. • To see examples of your trope in action in TV shows, books, movies, and more, go to TVTropes.org and use the search box.

  8. Exploring Further • This topic officially closes on the 20th of September. If you finish early, then… • Explore TVTropes and see how your favorite books, video games, movies, and TV shows break down. Look for patterns!
