  1. GIFTED AND TALENTED What does this mean?

  2. Congratulations! • So, you’re Gifted and Talented…. • How will this help you to be successful in school and beyond?

  3. Entitlement Gifted and Talented learners in our schools, as with all other pupils, have a right to an education that is suited to their needs and abilities, to allow them to fulfil their true potential.

  4. For gifted and talented pupils this means: • stretch and challenge in every classroom and in every school • opportunities to further their particular abilities outside school

  5. Entitlement • Ensuring that Gifted and Talented learners make at least 2 levels of progress in each key stage. • Monitoring of G and T pupils to ensure that especially those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds succeed.

  6. Definition Gifted and Talented learners are defined as those who have one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop those abilities).

  7. Definition • Gifted describes learners who have the ability to excel academically in one or more subjects: such as English, drama, technology; • Talented describes learners who have the ability to excel in practical skills such as sport, leadership, artistic performance, or in an applied skill.

  8. Identification • It is up to each school to decide on the proportion of their population who are Gifted and Talented.  • At Walkden, we have selected the top 10% of Year 7, based on CATS scores, and teacher recommendation from Primary and Year 7 staff.

  9. Support for Gifted and Talented • Your child’s individual subject teacher will provide suitable work to provide ‘stretch and challenge’ in lessons. This may be explicit, through extra tasks outside of lessons, or it may be through groupings for tasks and use of challenging questions. • Each teacher is aware of the individual strengths, as identified recently. If you feel that you have a talent or skill that you can ‘lead’ with in the classroom, say so!

  10. Support for Gifted and Talented • At school, Nicky Hill is the G and T co-ordinator, she will monitor the progress of each pupil throughout their 5 years and intervene if there is underachievement. • Pupils are given enrichment opportunities outside the classroom during the 5 years at Walkden. For example, Science detectives at MOSI, or Newspaper in a day in Y7 to Study Skills and Career guidance/work experience in Y10/11.

  11. Other support available • Young Gifted and Talented (YG&T)(www.ygt.dcsf.gov.uk) • YG&T is run by CfBT Education Trust, provides information, resources and opportunities to help support gifted learners, their parents/carers, educators, governors and local authorities. YG&T also works through Regional Partnerships and Excellence Hubs to provide opportunities for learners and their educators within the regions.

  12. Other support available School census and National RegisterSchools are now required to indicate which of their pupils are gifted and talented in their School Census return. This data together with data from the YG&T Learner Academy about its student members, will be brought together to form the National Register.

  13. Purpose of the National Register • support schools in their identification of gifted and talented pupils • support those working at all levels - national, regional and local - to track the progress made by gifted and talented learners, and their sub-groups • monitor the effectiveness of policies and enable interventions to be more sharply targeted • help find, as a sub-set, those pupils aged 4 - 19 who are eligible for YG&T membership so that they can benefit from the opportunities and services of the academy

  14. What can you do? • Encourage your son/daughter to be actively involved in their learning. • Help your son/daughter to realise their Gifted and Talented potential in their key subject/s • Access the young gifted and talented website for more information • Contact Nicky Hill at school if you would like further information, guidance, or support.

  15. Finally, Your son/daughter is clearly capable in one or more subject, but not necessarily every subject! Keep expectations realistic and encourage them to have a happy, healthy, successful time at Walkden High School.
