The Durrell Center has undergone a remarkable $10.7 million renovation, revitalizing the 1968 building with extensive interior and exterior enhancements. Featuring new dining venues, student seminar rooms, and vibrant gathering spaces, this renovation focuses on sustainability, pursuing LEED Gold certification. The updated center now hosts diverse options, including a fresh salad bar and an outdoor dining deck. This transformation aims to create a bright, engaging environment for students, facilitating academic partnerships, and enriching community programming.

Project Overview • $10.7 million renovation of 1968 building • Extensive interior and exterior enhancements and landscaping • New dining venues, student seminar rooms, a dining outdoor deck, office for Residence Life GUIDE, and gathering and study spaces • Pursuing LEED Gold Commercial Interior certification with sustainability features including solar tubes, reclaimed materials, and low emitting materials throughout the building • Academic partners use seminar rooms for courses and Conference Services will use spaces in the summer
Academic Initiatives and Student Engagement • Community, dining, and student programming space • New meeting rooms and lounges for small study groups • Flexible larger spaces for residence hall programming • Classes including Key program, College of Natural Sciences, Student Affairs in Higher Education, and Health and Exercise Science held in seminar and meeting rooms • Dedicated office space for GUIDE (Gaining Understanding through Involvement, Diversity, and Education)
Dining Center Features • Distinct stations featuring a wide variety of menu choices including a fresh salad bar, made-to-order deli, noodle and pasta venue, pizza and international food station, homestyle station and grill, and our famous Bakeshop desserts • Durrell Express with to-go options including sushi and gelato • Unique seating arrangements and an outdoor dining deck to offer views of the foothills
Positive Impacts • Space is bright and active; old space was dark and dreary and rarely used by students • More flexible spaces allow for significant increase of utilization; academic partners and meetings take place during the day and programming takes place in the evening • Dining has increased up to 100% from the old dining center which still had cafeteria-style serving lines • New Durrell Center will provide additional programming and dining space for Laurel Village, opening in Fall 2014 with 600 beds
