  7. Americans who supported expansion to the west were called expansionists. They wanted to… 1. claim land for farming and land speculation 2. find new markets for manufactured goods and services 3. Provide more living space for millions of immigrants 4. locate harbors that could be used to expand trade with China and others 5. Seek employment and avoid creditors- (debts- Panic 1837) 6. Spread the virtues of democracy According to this list...which group of people would likely benefit economically from western expansion? Which groups will lose? Procedure- In groups – read Chapter 6 Section 2 and fill in the timeline in your packets---When you are done, construct a paragraph (as a group) that answers the focus question. Turn in the answer to Mrs. Casetta before you leave!   11. Native Americans tried to hold on to culture, even when forced to give up traditional land. Some tried to assimilate the advancing white culture Few tried to keep whites off their land Early 1830s- The Black Hawk War Chief Black Hawk-(Sauk Tribe) lead a rebellion against the United States Four months in Wi and IL –Illinois militia members slaughtered 200 Sauk and Fox people –as a result the Sauk and Fox were forcibly removed to areas west of the Mississippi. Settlers and Native Americans

As settlers moved west, small numbers of Native Americans attacked them. • The US Gov. called a conference in Laramie, Wyoming 1851 • Cheyenne, Arapaho, Sioux, Crow and others • “to maintain good faith and friendship in all their mutual intercourse (interactions), and to make an effective and lasting peace” • Native America tribes kept a good portion of the plains, and they agreed to allow US construction and settlement—the US would make annual payments to the tribes--- • The US would repeatedly violate it’s side of the treaty with subsequent treaties requiring Native American to abandon their land and move to reservations Fort Laramie Treaty
