  1. Timelines & Chronological Order

  2. What is a Timeline • A time line, is essentially a graphic organizer that helps show chronological order of things. • Question 1: • How can we use timelines?

  3. What does chronological order mean? • Chronological Order/Chronology • Is the science of arranging events in order of occurrence in time, such as the use of a timeline or sequence of events. • Question/Prompt 2 • Explain chronological order/chronology in your own words. • 1-2 sentences about how you would explain chronological order/chronology….

  4. How can we use chronological order? • Question/Prompt 3 • How can we use chronological order in history class? • Will chronology help?

  5. Chronology of You • Question/Prompt 4 • Put the major event of your own life in chronological order. (At least 6) • Include Bullets and Dates in listing format • Starting with Birth 19.. I was born • What shaped your life • What life changing events happened • Interesting facts • Fun stuff • Major Break news

  6. Understanding the Gregorian Calendar • Gregorian calendar, AKA: Western calendar • is internationally the most widely accepted and used civil calendar. • B.C.= Before Christ • This is a count down until the event of the birth of Christ • Meaning the bigger the number the further back in history you go. • Synonym= B.C.E=Before Common Era • B.C.E. means the same thing as B.C. and will be used interchangeable in this class

  7. AD/CE • A.D. Means Anno Domini • Synonyms= C.E.=Common Era • This is the Era we are currently in. • This Era we count up and every year accumulates, starting with year 1 and going to present day 2013.

  8. Centuries • Centuries are every 100 years • B.C./B.C.E again counting down • A.D./C.E. again counting up • Determining centuries can be confusing because you have to take in account 001 as first century. • Example BC/BCE • 001-99 BCE=1st Century BCE (each Century goes 100 years back in time) • Example AD/CE Centuries • 001-99= 1st Century • 100-199= 2nd Century

  9. How long ago • The rules. • RULE 1: • If you are in BC/BCE times you take the year it is in and add 2013 to it. • This will give you an idea of how long ago something happened. • Example: 2000 BC was 4013 years ago 2013 +2000 4013

  10. Rule 2 • Rule 2: • If you are in AD/CE times you will Subtract the date number by 2013. • Example: 1913 was one hundred years ago • 2013 -1913 100 years ago
