Generally they are open for one week from Wed to Wed on the crucible. • You may take the quizzes as many times as you want during the week interval

  3. More notes • Homework is graded for completion and process. • Due at the beginning of class…must be complete with work shown. No work = 0 points. • Don’t skip the word problems (-1 for every w-p skipped) • Integrity….don’t take credit for someone else’s work • Each assignment is 10 points. • Late work is 50% until test day, needs a z slip • Write # for Problems you need help with on class whiteboard • Tests will be every 2-2.5 weeks. • Show all work in standard mathematical notation • Neatness counts…if I can’t read it I will mark it wrong. • Yes , there will be word problems…

  4. Answers to common questions Everything since kindergarten is on the test

  5. Answers to common questions Can I have extra credit? Look online!

  6. Things that really annoy Mrs. Brady • Eating/drinking in my class • Talking when I’m talking • Ipods and cell phones in my class • Tardiness…yes I will mark you tardy and hold you accountable • Packing up before I dismiss you • If you can not remember how to do Algebra, then LOOK IT UP! This is not an Algebra I class. • If you were absent, then look at our website to find out what we did. Life goes on without you….and so does class! Don’t wait and whimper… • If you need to ask a question, then please do not make a declarative statement. • No Whining… and on that note...

  7. Evaluate 7 + 4 • 3. Is your answer 33 or 19? You can get 2 different answers depending on which operation you did first. We want everyone to get the same answer so we must follow the order of operations.

  8. Remember the phrase“Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS. ORDER OF OPERATIONS 1. Parentheses - ( ) or [ ] 2. Exponents or Powers 3. Multiply and Divide (from left to right) 4. Add and Subtract (from left to right)

  9. Once again, use PEMDAS to evaluate 7 + 4  3 = 7 + 12 (Multiply.) =19(Add.)

  10. Example #114 ÷ 7 • 2 - 3 = 2• 2 - 3 (Divide l/r.) = 4 - 3 (Multiply.) = 1(Subtract.)

  11. Example #23(3 + 7) 2 ÷ 5 = 3(10) 2 ÷ 5 (parentheses) = 3(100) ÷ 5 (exponents) = 300 ÷ 5 (multiplication) =60 (division)

  12. Example #320 - 3 • 6 + 102 + (6 + 1) • 4 = 20 - 3 • 6 + 102 + (7) • 4 (parentheses) = 20 - 3 • 6 + 100 + (7) • 4 (exponents) = 20 - 18 + 100 + (7) • 4 (Multiply l/r.) = 20 - 18 + 100 + 28 (Multiply l/r.) = 2 + 100 + 28 (Subtract l/r.) = 102 + 28 (Add l/r.) =130 (Add.) Can you combine any steps? Do all M/D left to right The do all A/S left to right

  13. Which of the following represents 112 + 18 - 33· 5in simplified form? • -3,236 • 4 • 107 • 16,996

  14. Simplify24 – 6 · 4 ÷ 2 • 72 • 36 • 12 • 0

  15. Lesson Close • How do we remember Order of Operations?
