GTAs - ITAP Course & Exam • All international GTAs must complete both ITAP course and examination • International GTAs are expected to achieve a CONDITIONAL PASS during their first two semesters. • More advanced teaching assignments may require FULL PASS status • Continued GTA support dependent on ITAP status • Continued GTA support also dependent on your effectiveness in ECE courses • See Leslie Jones (Dept. GTA/GRA Assignments • Your assignments and assigned professor(s) are provided in the letter you will receive today • See your assigned professor(s) as soon as possible (set appointment) • Your assistantship assignment does not include your academic effort
Enrollment Requirements • Minimum of 6 course hours • Lecture courses, research, seminar, audit hours all count • No more minimum requirement imposed by ECE Department
Registration for Courses and Appointments • Registration for courses is a critical component of graduate assignments • No graduate assignment (GTA or GRA) can be made (finalized) until the student is enrolled • This is a common cause of late payments of assistantships • We have a formal graduate student advising and registration time • All graduate students are expected to be advised and register for classes in the same time frame as undergraduate students • This will assist in course scheduling and graduate appointment paperwork
Keys and Security Codes • Keys and Security Codes • Your personal responsibility • Don’t give to anyone else • Security Code Use • Disarm the alarm before you enter • Arm the alarm when you leave • Your name is in the computer • See Maureen Beard (Dept. Office) for keys and security codes
GTA/GRA Paychecks & Mailboxes • If you have received an appointment letter and accepted it, expect a paycheck at the end of the month. • Exceptions to this include students whose appointment has just been processed • If no check, see Debbie Woods (Dept. Office) • If you haven’t received an appointment letter, immediately see Debbie Woods • If you don’t have a mailbox, see Maureen Beard (Dept. Office) • Mailboxes located in departmental office
GTA/GRA Paychecks • New graduate assistants must pick-up their 1st check • Payroll Office • G69 Rose Building
Insurance • The university provides basic health insurance for graduate assistants • http://www.ua.edu/academic/colleges/cchs/cchs/hc/insurance.cfm • Russell Student Health Center • On-line form to fill out • Deadline for completing insurance forms – see web site or contact Student Health Center
Social Security Number • Required for all Graduate Assistants • If you are a new student without a social security number please contact Capstone International Program for assistance • 105 B. B. Comer (next to student services building)
Memorandum of Appointment and Acceptance of Offer • See Debbie Woods (Dept. Office) to sign memorandum of appointment (MOA) • Beginning Immediately • This paperwork must be completed and submitted to the graduate school as a condition of your employment • The “Acceptance of Offer” form must be completed and returned to Debbie Woods as soon as possible.
Graduate Offices • Please see Maureen Beard for an office assignment • Consult your graduate advisor to determine if he/she has a predetermined office for you • Assignment will still be made by Maureen Beard
Continuing Graduate Students • Continuing graduate students • Make sure any “I” or “NG” grades have been cleared from your graduate transcript • The graduate school will enforce the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement for graduate assistants
Your Advisor and Committee • Should have an advisor by your second semester here • If not, see Dr. Haskew • Should have your committee by the end of the second semester • Plan II M.S.: all 3 committee members may be from ECE • Make sure graduate committee form is turned in to Leslie Jones when complete
