Poaching & Stock Theft To control a threat to wildlife & livestock farming & gauge general community support for the efforts of the Conservancy Fires Flooding POACHING STOCK-THEFT Problem Animals To track problem animal incidents over time & measure the effort that goes into reducing conflict with problem animals 8 L Elephant/rhino monitoring To track these rare animals as they have high value and management can be applied on the basis of an individual animal or herd DAMAGE REPORT Damage to crops Damage to water Damage to livestock ; Attacks on humans Predators w o 8 0 To estimate predator populations at any given time & get trends on how these species are performing over time t 0 • Management • Game introduction & harvesting • Maintain water points • Fence maintenance • Fire breaks & firefighting • Manage trophy hunter • Road maintenance Wildlife patrols To get trends on various wildlife species to see how they are performing over time Community Shepherds are the natural resource management arm of the Community. In addition to monitoring, they also perform functions to maintain and improve common property resources. Mortalities To track mortalities to alert the Committees if there is a sudden rise in mortalities. & Importantly to determine the cause of mortalities be this poaching, disease, etc Environmental Shepherds (=Khoadi //Hoas) Community Meetings Rainfall, Fire & Floods To provide information to Conservancy, Agric. Union & Agric. Association Committees & inform ordinary Conservancy & Agric Union members & Visitors about policies and activities To track environmental ‘impacts’ that influence the natural resources so that changes can be explained and management can be adapted Committee meetings Community liaison meetings Ongoing Veld monitoring Ongoing Ongoing To track seasonal and long-term changes in the veld so as to understand the impacts of grazing, wood collection and droughts and to predict food shortages for livestock and wildlife Ongoing Monthly & Yearly Monthly Ongoing Environmental Shepherds Ongoing Monthly Monthly Livestock Monitoring Ongoing Yearly To track livestock condition, numbers of livestock and movement of herds in the area Fixed-Route Vehicle Counts • To get: • population estimates for quota setting & carrying capacity • trends of wildlife species to see how they are performing over time • a map of where the important wildlife areas are To provide GFU support where required
