  6. Certification programs. • Fair Trade Certification. • Rainforest Alliance Certification. • Organic Certification. • BioTrade (Standard for Bio production – Not certification).

  7. Fair Trade certified (Social) • FEDECADE and its groups produce and exports cocoa beans according to the Fair Trade standards since May 2005. • This system benefits and protects the interests of more than five hundred small scale producers with a social focus. • Some of FEDECADE’s markets demand only the compliance of FT and other demands the compliance of FT in combination with Organic standards.

  8. Rainforest Alliance certified (Sustainable) • FEDECADE has been working according a sustainable production model through the compliance of the Rainforest Alliance criteria’s since October 2000. • Progressively the internal control system and the implementation of the norm have been improved. • Nowadays a RA training program is being executed based on the farmer’s field schools model. • This certification improves the life standards of thousands people in more than three thousands hectares of cocoa crops.

  9. Organic production certified(Free of chemicals) • FEDECADE produce under organic standards and obtained the certification through BCS agency in May 2005. • Organic certified farmers rule their crops according to the Organic Internal Manual, and it was created based on the European regulation CEE 2092/91.

  10. Bio Trade (Biodiversity). • Currently FEDECADE is being assisted by CORPEI (Exports and Imports Promoter Corporation of Ecuador) to implement the Bio Trade standards, and then in the opening of this new demand. This project pretends to promote cocoa as a Bio Product based on its native origin and importance on the biodiversity conservation.

  13. Conclusions • In the implementation work all the different programs are closely related. • It is cheaper and more efficient to the organizations to manage only one Internal Control System ICS that involves all the certification programs (Internal rules, procedures, registers, personnel, training plan, trace, and audits). • We think that the existence of the different certification seals in the market is very healthy for us. Because it provides us products and clients diversity. As well as free competition and a negotiation capacity.

  14. Conclusions • Is positive for the producers when markets pays special premium for the combination of different certification seals. • The existence of these certification programs and specialized markets have brought us the possibility to improve our life quality. (Social, environmental, economic, culture and agriculture). • It is important to give an emphasis on the training programs and in people’s habits, and we think that certification programs in general are demanding to much non useful documentation.
