  2. INTRODUCTION • Lobby and advocacy is the core business of Kenya National Federation of Agricultural Producers (KENFAP) in the agricultural sector. • KENFAP supports networking, advocacy and joint action initiatives with like minded organizations to forge alliances in strategic partnerships

OBJECTIVES • The Overall Goal is to develop and implement strategies for enhancing the farmers voice in lobby and advocacy • Obtaining formal (i.e. legal) recognition of farmers’ organisations from the government. • Formation and strengthening of national, regional and international networks; • Establishing dialogue between farmers organizations, researchers, policymakers and policy analysts;

OBJECTIVES CONTI… • Formulation of policies affecting the Agricultural sector through KEPSA • Providing up-to-date information to CSOs to facilitate their participation in developing agriculture and rural development policies • Various policy review committees to represent the farmers’ views through

ACTIVITIES • Formulation of policies affecting the Agricultural sector-through KEPSA • Government Ministries-This is mainly by invitation where the federation is asked to send a representative to sit in various policy review committees to represent the farmers’ views. • Commodity associations’ representation

  9. KENFAP’S INVOLVEMENT IN CAADP COMPACT • The Kenya CAADP compact is implemented through The agricultural sector development strategy. (ASDS) • Private sector participation in the government processes has been through its umbrella body, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) • KEPSA operates through sector boards, with that of agriculture being chaired by the Kenya National Federation of Agricultural Producers (KENFAP) • KENFAP was instrumental at the Task Forces, Thematic working groups, Technical inter-ministerial committees and the inter-ministerial coordinating committee. This has been possible because there are clear provisions in the SRA document (The predecessor of ASDS)

OUTPUTS • Institutional frameworks in place • Enhanced relationships between farmer organizations and other stakeholders in lobby and advocacy (e.g. research and extension institutes, ministries of agriculture, universities) • Demands on government by farmers strengthened. • Farmers demands incorporated the into policy research agendas • Improved access to policymakers by farmers • Enabling policy environment for small scale farmers.
