Functional mandates • Planning, management, and implementation of agricultural research covering the nation • Institutional and human resources development • Advise Government and other bodies on agricultural science and technology • Liaise nationally and internationally • Dissemination of research proven agricultural technologies, packages, and findings • Source and expend fund on agricultural research

Some Strategic functions • Custodian of the largest Genebank in SSA with over 450,000 accession • Custodian of the international reference for simsim and sunflower • Custodian of the international reference elite hard of Sahiwal and Boran • World reference for Rinderpest vaccines • World reference on wheat germplasm • Regional reference on biotechnology research

  5. Vision 2000-2010 An Institute of Excellence in Agricultural Research and Technology Transfer, contributing to an improved quality of life for all Citizens of Kenya.

Mission statement 2000-2010 • An agricultural research institute, that develops and disseminates appropriate agricultural technologies in collaboration with stakeholders. • Contribute to the sustainable improvement in the livelihoods of Kenyan citizens by increasing agricultural productivity, post harvest value of agricultural and livestock products, and conserving the environment • Proactively seeks to acquire ad contribute knowledge and creative solutions that are participatory; client oriented, holistic, system oriented, gender sensitive and affordable by users

Objectives 2000-2010 • Develop and validate appropriate technologies and knowledge • Develop and enhance appropriate participatory and consultative technology development approaches and methodologies • Disseminate knowledge and technologies and to catalyze the process of outreach and adoption of agricultural technologies • Contribute to and influence the development of Agricultural policy environment • Strengthen the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of KARIs Institutional capacity • Establish sustainable funding initiatives

KARI’s Broad Research Programme areas • Food Crops research (cereals, root and tuber, legumes, pulses, etc) • Horticultural and industrial crops research (flowers, vegetables, fruits, cotton, herbs, spices, etc) • Animal Production and range research (dairy, beef, pastures and folder, small ruminants, range ecology, etc) • Animal health research (all animal diseases) • Socio-economics and Biometrics (crop, livestock and Natural resources, impact assessment, priority setting, etc)

KARI’s Broad Research Programme areas • Land and water management (soil fertility, survey and conservation; vegetation survey; agroforestry; irrigation and drainage, GIS, etc) • Cross-cutting (Biotechnology, IDS, ATIRI, ARF, FSU) • Research activities range from strategic to adaptive • Implementing over 38 research programmes with more than 540 projects and activities at centres
