4. CP Objectives 3/26 • To make note cards to summarize research. • To differentiate between plagiarism, paraphrasing, and direct quotes. • To review “This I Believe” essays and “Dark Romanticism Unit Tests.”

5. Argument • Take out a blank note card and put your name on it • Write these 3 categories on the note card and fill them in based on your argument • Argument- • Solution- • Case Study- • Star the points that you have research articles to support

6. Direct Quoting VS. Paraphrasing • Direct Quoting • Word-for-word in quotations • Cited • Use when there is no better way to say something • Use when you want explicit support • Paraphrasing • Summarized in your own words • Cited, but not in quotations • Use when giving data or background information about a topic Use a combination on your note cards so you have quotes and summary for your paper In your paper, use parenthetical documentation for both quotations and paraphrasing. This is not needed on your note cards, although you do need “quotes” marked You will need to parenthetically document on your outline

7. Direct Quote and Paraphrasing Example • Sample: Lady Gaga, stage name for Stefani Joanne Angelina, is a recording artist in America. She was born on 28th March 1986 to her parents, Joseph Germanotta and Cynthia, who are of Italian American origin. She developed interest in the music industry at an early age as demonstrated by her interests and ability to play the piano while she was four years of age. • Lady Gaga started her love affair with music when she was very young: “She[Lady GaGa] developed interest in the music industry at an early age as demonstrated by her interests and ability to play the piano while she was four years of age” (LastName 3). • Lady Gaga was fascinated with the music industry as a child, and she started playing piano when she was four.

Plagiarism • Failure to document with quotation marks any material copied directly from sources • Failure to acknowledge paraphrased material • Failure to provide a Bibliography or Works Cited • Use of another’s work as your own • If you “copy and paste” into your paper without citing It can happen by accident, so be careful Note card issues College example

Note Card Requirements • Card from today on top • Initials and block on back of each card • Everything on sample needed except note card # • No 2 “guidelines” should be identical • No more than 1-2 notes per card • Direct quotes or paraphrased** (plagiarism) • Notes come from your annotations • Should support your argument/thesis • Brackets and ellipses

15. “This I Believe” • Many of you lost points for not following the rubric • Those of you who had “to-be” verbs lost A LOT of points • Contractions • Earn points back

16. “This I Believe” • Earn back all “to-be” verb points: • Hand back in all of the original papers with rubric AND • On a separate sheet of paper, write every sentence that has a “to-be” verb in it, and then rewrite this sentence without the “to-be” verb • This can be typed or handwritten • DUE: Tuesday, 4/2
