  1. Server Virtualization Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications

  2. What is Virtualization? • Virtualization is the pooling and sharing of IT resources that includes: servers, storage, and networking.

  3. WHY VIRTUALIZE? COST BENEFITS • REDUCE HARDWARE COSTS BY AS MUCH AS 50% • REDUCE TIME TO PROVISION NEW SERVERS UP TO 70% • REDUCE POWER CONSUMPTION - SAVINGS $500 - $600 PER YEAR, PER SERVER • MINIMIZE DOWNTIME ENSURING BUSINESS CONTINUITY

  4. VMware Virtualization • HA / DRS VMware HA allows virtual machines on failed ESX server hosts to restart on another ESX host. The DRS solution uses system algorithms and user created rules to determine optimal placement of virtual machines

  5. VMware Virtualization (Contd.) • VMotion Ability to migrate a running VM from one physical host to another without interruption • Storage VMotion Ability to migrate storage from one location to another without server interruption • VDI – virtual desktop infrastructure

  6. VMware Virtualization (Contd.) • Site Recovery Manager Guides users through the process of creating, automating, and testing disaster recovery plans for their virtual infrastructure

  7. Physical vs Virtual • Started to Virtualize 4th quarter 2005 • 90% of all new servers are VM’s • 1000 VM’s by 2009-2010

  8. Accomplished Today DoITT has deployed over 500 Virtual Machines on HP DL 585s running VI3 Implemented VMware 3.5 and Virtual Infrastructure 2.5 We are averaging 25 to 30 VM’s per physical host

  9. Accomplished (Contd.) • Hosted applications: - Web Applications (Includes agencies public facing websites) - SQL Database - Blackberry • Lab Manager Developers’ tool for rapid deployment of test environment

  10. Current • Mission critical application deployment • Citrix application delivery infrastructure – testing phase • Thin Clients (Pilot test deployment of 50 Thin Clients including the 311 Call Center)

  11. Exchange Enterprise Vault Business Continuity DoITT’s Next Steps

  12. DoITT’s Offerings • Platespin / Power Recon - Deployed in agencies for 30 days - Create virtualization assessment with software that measures, analyses and determines the optimal fit between server resource supply and workload demand

  13. Virtualization Report
