The Inspector’s Speech 57 ‘But just remember this, One Eva Smith has gone but There are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us……… all intertwined with our lives, and what we think and say and do. We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other. What do you think? • Knows things before asking. • Questions the family one at a time and does not let them see the photograph together. • Does not ‘know’ the Chief Constable. • Stands up to Mr and Mrs Birling even though they are rich and influential. • Seems more concerned with morality than criminal law.
