  2. Refresher Fire Safety Training Welcome to your University Fire Awareness Safety refresher training. You are being asked to complete this training program as the law requires you, as an employee, to undertake refresher training at least every 3 years. You must cooperate with your employers to ensure the workplace is safe from fire and its effects, and that you will not do anything that may put yourself or others at risk. Employers must make an assessment of the workplace and take sufficient action to help minimize and control any potential risk. Part of that action has already started by asking you to complete this training program. By the end of it you should be able to execute your responsibilities with regard to fire, understand the nature of fire, and recognise the threat of fire to yourself and others.

Refresher Fire Safety Training The following slides have been designed to give staff who have not attended fire safety training for some time, a refresher on the main points that they should be aware of.   4. Fire Triangle Fire is a chemical reaction involving 3 components: Oxygen, Heat and Fuel If you remove any 1 of these components the fire will go out ….. Oxygen Heat Fuel

  5. Remove theOxygen - Cover with fire blanket. - Use CO2 Extinguisher. • Remove theHeat - Use Water to cool. • Remove theFuel - Turn off Gas. Remove combustibles from the area of the fire. Break the Triangle to put out the fire.

  6. Water extinguisher to be used on fire involving paper, wood, cloth etc. Water extinguishers should not be used on flammable liquids or electrical equipment. Foam extinguishers to be used as with water but can also be used on flammable liquids. Foam extinguishers should not be used on electrical equipment or chip pans. CO2 extinguishers to be used on live electrical fires and flammable liquids. CO2 extinguishers should not be used on chip pan fires. Fire Blankets to be used to smother fires in chip pans, persons clothing etc. Fire Fighting Equipment

  9. Causes of fire alarm actuationsin the University.

Fire Safety Measures Fire Resisting Doors are; • Designed to stop the spread of smoke, heat flames etc. for at least 30 minutes to allow a safe exit in the event of a fire. • Placed onto risk rooms (kitchens, labs etc.) and within corridors to shorten the route to a safe area, thereby giving a smoke free access to open air. • Fitted with self closing devices to ensure that doors are in the correct position to do their job.

  14. FIRE ACTION What to do in the Event of a Fire • FIRE INSTRUCTIONS • IF YOU DISCOVER OR SUSPECT A FIRE • 1. Immediately Operate the Nearest Fire Alarm Call Point.. • 2. Fight the Fire (But Only if Safe to do so). • 3. Evacuate the Building Closing all Doors Behind You. • 4. Proceed to the Assembly Point at :- • ON HEARING THE FIRE ALARM • 1. Evacuate the Building Closing all Doors Behind You. • 2. Proceed to the Assembly Point. • 3. Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so by the incident controller. • DIAL 3333 ON INTERNAL OR 0800 525790 ON AN OUTSIDE LINE TO GIVE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT TO SECURITY. your Assembly Point should be written here

  15. Action on discovering fire Raise alarm by breaking the nearest fire alarm call point. Evacuate the building using the nearest available exit. Report to your Assembly Point. You should only attempt to fight the fire in the very early stages and only if you consider it safe to do so. Better to leave the room and close the door than put yourself at risk. On Hearing the Fire Alarm Evacuate the building using the nearest available exit. Report to the Assembly Point. Emergency Numbers. On Campuscall security on3333 or 0800 525790 (recommend this is put on your mobile phone). It is important that Security are made aware of the incident and call the fire service so that they can meet them and take them immediately to the incident. Off CampusDial 999and ask for the fire service. Fire Procedure
