  7. USCHS Choral Music • Women's Choir - Women, Grade 9 (Free elective - no audition required.) • Men's Ensemble - Men, Grades 9-12. (Free elective - no audition required.) • Clarion Choir - Women, Grades 10-12. (Free elective - no audition required.) • Pantheon Choir - Women, Grades 11-12, Men, Grades 10-12. (Audition required. Independent study available for those with schedule conflicts.) • Chanteclairs - Women, Grades 11-12, Boys grades 10-12. (Extra-curricular. Between 24-28 students, audition required. Students must be enrolled in Pantheon Choir.) • Theatre - Grades 10-12. (Free elective - no audition required.) • AP Music Theory -Grades 11-12.   12. Advice From Freshmen Students for Success • Do ALL homework, especially the challenge problems • Ask for help on a regular basis • Studying is a must. Things move very quickly and you need to have a full understanding of all aspects of lessons. • Pay attention in class and take thorough notes

  13. Advice From Freshmen Students • Study from every resource provided. Use the online book for tutorials, extra practice problems, and practice quizzes. • Work hard at the beginning of the year so when it comes to finals, you will be more prepared. If you get off to a slow start, it will hurt you later on.

  14. Advice From Freshmen Students • Show all work or you’re doomed!!! • Read lesson in advance. • Geometry involves a different way of thinking, so it may take a while to fully understand it. Stick with it and your hard will definitely pay off.

  15. CT Algebra part 1 and part 2 • -Computer based program from Carnegie Learning • -Emphasizes real life applications • -Reasons to take part 1 • -Reasons to take part 2 • -Algebra affects more courses in High School than any other course.

English Department: Academic English 9 • One year course, fulfilling 9th grade English requirement • Reading: short story, novel, poetry, non-fiction, drama and supplemental texts • Writing: timed writings and formal papers, using primary source quotations • Vocabulary: contextual vocabulary and additional 240 word program • Grammar: required units throughout the year

English Department: Honors English 9 • One year course, fulfilling 9th grade English requirement • Reading: 2 more core texts and rigorous supplemental reading program with 9 additional texts • Writing: emphasis on textual analysis of primary source evidence • Vocabulary: in-depth application of contextual vocabulary • Grammar: review and application of skills • Research: emphasis on documentation skills

Academic American Civics and Global Affairs • One year course, fulfilling 9th grade Social Studies requirement • Study of what it means to be a US citizen • Study of the different economic, political and cultural systems of the world • Requirements: Unit exams, unit projects, graded writing assignments

American Civics (1st Semester) – Essentially, the study (application) of what it means to be an American citizen (through an examination of the American Government). • Why? – an engaged and informed citizenry is crucial to the continuation of (and improvement upon) a participatory democracy – that means YOU!

All Ninth Grade Honors/MYP students must complete a minimum of five-(5) hours of approved community service NO LATER THAN mid-January, 2013; written verification of these service hours will be required A class presentation on your experience will be done in Jan. 2013 – Info. Packet on Community Svc. will be distributed at “move-up” day

  22. World Geography (2nd Semester) • The study of the people, places, events, and trends that shape our world . • Essentially, a study of how the world is organized today and how it became organized in this fashion.

  23. Requirements / Personal Characteristics of the MYP/HN Social Studies Student • Highly motivated and organized • Strong time-management skills • Strong reading comprehension skills • Ability to absorb new material fairly quickly

  24. Strong analytical and reasoning skills, with the ability to show these skills both in a written fashion and orally (through graded discussions and presentations) • You CANNOT get by in this class on your “smarts” alone!! (be warned )

  25. How are you assessed (graded)? • Exams and Quizzes • Writing Assignments • Participation • Individual and Group Research Projects, typically with a writing component or presentation • Homework • HW is assigned nearly every night and will take you anywhere from 15-45 mins, on average

  26. Conceptual Biology • Student-centered pacing • Hands on learning with less emphasis on homework • Textbook used as a reference book • Smaller assessments; material chunking • Review for tests in class

  27. Academic Biology • Less depth; slower pace; more practice in class • Teacher directed learning occurs more during class; homework completion expected outside of class • Minimal independent textbook reading • Tests similar to review sheets and homework

Honors Biology • More depth; faster pace; less practice • Independent learning; daily studying outside of class expected in addition to homework completion • Textbook is read outside of class before the topic is covered (large time commitment) • Application of knowledge emphasized on tests (critical thinking) • Majority of grade based on tests and labs
