  3. ERIKSON IN SCHOOL The school community helps students foster… INITIATIVE –choices INDUSTRY – goal setting, responsibility and support during struggle IDENTITY – peers, gender, self concept INTIMACY – trusting feelings, handling emotions

  4. ERIKSON IN SCHOOL • The school is a community and as such must design itself for everyone in the community. • Communities do not look alike. • Which of these things impact your classroom and school community? GENDER ETHNICITY SES RELIGION DISABILITIES

  6. KOHLBERG -- criticisms • Stages too hierarchical and sequential • Cognitive vs affective aspects of moral reasoning • Adult stages may ignore cultural issues • Bias toward males (Gilligan)

  7. Why do we care about social and moral development in school? • Schools are communities • Communities have standards • Certain acts are tolerated – others are not • Aggression (physical/verbal; violent/not violent) • Bullying • Cheating

  8. WHAT IS JUST?WHAT IS FAIR? • Distinguish between justice and fairness.
