  2. Socialcompetence (SC) SC: is a complex systemof social abilities, habits, skills and knowledge (Argyle, 1999). SC:includes specific social, emotional and cognitive abilities, behaviors and motivations (Rose-Krasnor, 1997).

  3. EmotionalCompetence (EC) • Emotional competence comprises three basic components: • (1) expression of emotions, • (2) understanding of emotions • (3) experience of emotions (Denham et al, 2003)

  4. Affectivesocialcompetence (ASC) • Affective social competence (ASC) includes three basic components: • (1) sending affective messages, • (2) receiving affective messages, • (3) experiencing affect. (Halberstadt, Denham, Dunsmore, 2001)

  5. Affectivesocialcompetence (ASC) • Within each component there are four abilities: • (1) awareness, • (2) identification, • (3) working within a social context, • (4) management and regulation.

  6. Socialskills and abilities • Social skills: • are specific strategiesused by an individual to perform social tasks effectively (Walker, 1995). • are seen as socially acceptable learned behaviors (Cartledge andMilburn,2002).

  7. Socialskills and abilities • The system of social abilities: • is composed of simple and complexabilities, • and of the components of abilities, that is of skills, routines and the socialknowledge accumulated by the individual (Zsolnai and Józsa, 2003).

  8. Assessment of social skills and abilities • (1)interviewswith the child, parent, teachers if possible, • (2)observationsof the child in structured and unstructured situations, • (3)rating scales by the child, parent, and teacher, • (4)peer nominations: use two dimensions social preference and social impact

  9. Socialskillstraningprograms(SST) • The advantage of SST is that it focuses on teaching skills that can be learned. • specific techniques of SST: • (1) modelling, • (2) role-playing, • (4) cooperative learning, • (5) reinforcement
