  1. Labeling Your Composition Book Please follow directions carefully. A mislabeled notebook is very difficult to correct.

  2. Claim It! • On the front cover, use a permanent marker (Sharpie) to write: • First and Last Name • Your class period

  3. Open your notebook… • Write your name and today’s date in the center of the first page. This is your Title Page.

  4. Turn the page. Look at the back of your Title Page. • At the top of this page write: Table of Contents. • Place a small number 2 on the top right side. This is your page number. • Number down the left side of your page beginning with 7—yes 7. Do not begin with 1. Pages 1 – 6 are your Table of Contents, therefore they do not need to be labeled as such. • Number all lines consecutively: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11…

  5. Use this example to get started: Do not stop numbering at 20. Number as many lines as your notebook has.

  6. Label the page facing page 2: • At the top write: Table of Contents • Place a small number 3 on the top right side.

  7. Turn the page. Label this page also as Table of Contents. • Be sure to write the number 4 as your page number.

  8. Label pages 5 and 6 as Table of Contents. • Use small numbers on the upper right corners as your page numbers. • Now you see why on the first page of your Table of Contents you started with the number 7. You will not have any work on pages 1-6. Your work starts on page 7, therefore, your Table of Contents begins with page 7.

  9. Numbering your pages. • Go ahead and number all of your pages through the number 30. • Remember: Number the front and back of every sheet. • Odd-numbered pages will be the front. • Even-numbered pages will be the back. • Number carefully. 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26…

  10. Turn back to page 7. • Label this page: Diagnostic Essay.

  11. Diagnostic Essay • Your first assignment in your Composition Notebook will be to write an essay on a topic assigned to you. • The purpose of this essay is to give me an idea of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. • Your writing will be scored, but your score will not affect your grade; however, your score will determine your level of need for additional writing practice. • Do your best work. • Feel free to use pages 7, 8, 9, and 10 of your notebook.

  12. Expository Essay Topic Writing Prompt: Imagine that you could give advice to someone—it could be someone you know personally, a historical figure, or a famous person living today. Who is this person and what advice would you give them? Choose a familiar subject so that you can provide details and elaboration that explain why this person needs your advice. Writing Directions: Write an essay that identifies a person you would give advice to and explain the advice you would give him or her.
