  1. Use of Moodle VLE for lab preparation (computer assisted formative assessment with multimedia material) Dr Chris Blackman UCL Chemistry

  2. Talk outline • Laboratory teaching • Pedagogical model • Version 1.0 • Impact • Conclusions

  3. The value of the laboratory 2M + 2H2O  H2 + 2MOH

  4. A typical lab script

  5. Information processing model of learning

  6. A quick test....... • Seventeenth March • Twenty Third October • Fifteenth April Eighty Nine • Twenty Sixth September Nineteen Eighty Seven • 137 • 0123 • 14589 • 1267899

  7. Why a ‘prelab’? Prelab Requirements • Revision of theory • Reacquaintance with skills • Planning experiment • Feedback

  8. A tour of the prelab

  9. Impact of the prelab: Teacher perspective • Demonstrator Assesment • Online test / On-paper retest • Marked Assesment

  10. Impact of the prelab: Student perspective

  11. Impact of the prelab: Focus group • I think it’s useful in the sense that.....you just get a better grasp of it - you don’t walk into the labs blind as it were. • And also I like the videos as well, which.....shows you what you’re going to be doing, which is really helpful. • They might not all need a video but some people will … some people will need a video here, others will need a video there.

  12. Conclusions • Student feedback very positive • Positive effect on assesment • Will be implemented for all experiments in this course • Funding secured (UCL Futures) to introduce for first year laboratory courses • Refinement necessary

  13. Version1.1 • Refinement of formative feedback mechanism • All experiments to have both prelab AND postlab content • (Elements of summative assesment moved to prelab – feedback)

  14. Acknowledgements • Department of Chemistry (Steve Caddick, Graeme Hogarth) • LTSS (ELDG) • CALT (Mark Weyers) • Media Services • Mr Colin Crick
