Sacrament • Sacraments are highly symbolic. They were all instituted by Christ himself. • Sacraments “do” what they symbolize • Ex: Baptism symbolizes the soul being cleanses of original sin. Which is what God is making happen.
Sacrament • An outward sign and/or action representing God’s love and saving grace. Sacraments are living encounters with God. • In a broad sense, any person/event/thing through which you experience God’s presence in a new or deeper way could be called a sacrament.
7 Sacraments • There are 7 important events that the church celebrates. They are divided into three different types … • Sacraments of Initiation • Sacraments of Service • Sacraments of Healing
Sacraments of Initiation #1 • Baptism • Washes away original sin which was committed by Adam and Eve. • Also, your first initiation into the Catholic faith.
Sacrament of Initiation #1 • Christ has called his death and resurrection a baptism. • Baptism is usually initiated by parents on behalf of their child. Godparents are chosen to help raise the child in the Catholic faith. • Baptisimal promises are made by parents and Godparents for us.
Sacrament of Initiation #2 • Eucharist (Communion) • When we take part in the Eucharist, we do three important things. • Celebrate God’s love and faithfulness • Offer all that we are to God • Commit ourselves to be at peace. • Recall: Transubstantiation, consecration
Sacrament of Initiation #3 • Confirmation • When you are accepted into the Catholic faith as an adult. • The Holy Spirit comes to strengthen the gifts you received at Baptism • Performed by the Bishop.
Sacrament of Initiation #3 • When you are confirmed, you are saying that you fully understand the responsibility of being a Christian, and that you accept Christ and his teachings. • The word confirmation means strengthening • The person being confirmed chooses a sponsor, someone who will help them in their journey through the faith.
Confirmation Procedure • #1. Laying on of the Hands • The bishop asks the Holy Spirit to enter into that person.
Confirmation Procedure • #2: Annointing with oil • The candidate’s forehead is blessed with the sign of the cross. A special oil called “chrism”. It is a symbol of strength.
Confirmation Procedure • #3: A sponsor places a hand on the shoulder • #4: The bishop administers the sacrament
Symbols of Initation • Water – Symbol of baptism, sign of cleansing and rebirth • White garment – Symbol of baptism, means the person is “clothed in Christ” • Light – Baptism, sign that Christ brings light to that person’s life • Laying on of the Hands – Sign of the gift of the Holy Spirit • Oil – Sign of strength, beauty, health, and healing • Bread and Wine – Sign of our thanks and of our wish to offer ourselves to God.
Sacrament of Healing #1 • Reconciliation • The priest offers Jesus’ forgiveness to those who have sinned and repented • The point is to heal the relationship • Sign of hope and wholeness
Sacrament of Healing #2 • Anointing of the Sick • Offered to all those who are seriously sick to help heal them of things that hurt “on the inside” when they suffer • Helps sick people find God in their suffering • “Oil of chrism”.
Sacrament of Service #1 • Marriage • A man and woman make a covenant (a lifelong commitment) • Brings together a man and a woman as “one flesh” • Ring: No beginning, no end, just like God’s love • Married love is meant to last forever and be faithful. It is a sacred vocation of Christ.
Sacrament of Service #2 • Holy Orders • Establishes priests, deacons and bishops as legitimate leaders within the church • The emphasis is on dedicated, faithful service
Sacrament of Service #2 • Holy Orders • 3 levels of Holy Orders • Bishop • Priest • Deacon
Love • True love is … • Self giving. We care about the other person as much as or more than we do about ourselves • Faithful. We show our care for others even when it is inconvenient or when there is something else we’d rather do. • Unconditional. We care about them and want what is best for them no matter what.
