  3. Time • 40 class sessions x 1.5 hours = 60 hours per semester • In college, absences are not “excused” • 7:30 – 8:30 am OR 3:35-4:35 pm & other times by arrangement • Email: sue.morrell@k12.sd.us [“HELP”]

  4. Increased Amount of Reading • Professional & Student Models • Seven required books • Three full-length dramas • A raft of poetry • A self-selected classic novel for the final project • Analytical Thinking

  5. Increased Writing • Drafts are not required, but 5-8 drafts is typical of most early-on finished products. • Get over the “fix and submit” habit. Find a “meaner than dirt” editor! • If writing is difficult for you, be willing to spend the time now (this year) to get comfortable. • Coachability?

  6. Note-taking Skills • Develop a SYSTEM that works for you. • Back-up your work. (Recommendation: jump drive) • College students typically spend class time listening, thinking, interacting and out-of-class time taking notes. • Develop a portfolio of personal bests – preferably as an e-Portfolio. Aim to include at least 8 pieces representing your best work. [Wiki]

  7. A Sense of Interdependence You will need… • A reliable “contact” • A “meaner than dirt” reader of your draft work (someone beyond your instructor) • A willingness to contribute to group effort (“fair share” ethic) • An interest in asking meaningful questions to encourage others to think, reach, seek.

  8. Ethics & English  • Plagiarism • Crediting resources • Permissions for fair use

  9. Self-Awareness • What are your writing & reading strengths? • What are your writing & reading weaknesses? • What constrains your time? Can you manage time better? • Are you organized? Emotionally mature? • Do you have patience? • WRITE three to five paragraphs addressing these questions -- add a distinct introduction and conclusion.
