  3. Star of the Week • Monday: All About Me Poster • Tuesday: Sharing • Wednesday: Favorite Book • Thursday: Special Snack • Friday: We create a book for the Star • Star of the Week is in order of student birthdays, starting with the 1st of September.

  4. Mystery Reader Thursday 3:00pm Students LOVE having their family, friends, and relatives visit the classroom to share in our learning by reading a favorite story aloud to the class. Please sign up to be a Mystery Reader!

  5. Pathway to Learning • Behavior Management System • “On the Path” – Expected behavior. • “In the Grass” – Unexpected behavior, conference with teacher at recess. • “In the Forest” – Repeated unexpected behavior, phone call home by teacher and student.

  6. First Grade is a year of growth and learning new skills. • Academic Skills • Social Skills • Understanding takes time and practice.

  7. Balanced Literacy CAFÉ reading instruction: • Comprehension • Accuracy • Fluency • Expanded Vocabulary Daily 5 literacy practice: • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Listen to Reading • Word Work • Writing

Read to Self – “The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just right reading level.” • Read to Someone – “Reading to someone allows for time to practice strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community.” • Listen to Reading – “We hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. We learn more words, thus expanding our vocabulary and becoming better readers.” Daily 5 Reading

  9. Journaling – “Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day.” • Writing – Prewrite, Rough Draft, Edit, Revise, Final Draft, Publish, Share. • Word Work - Teach children to read, spell, and use high-frequency words. Teach word family patterns which allow children to read and spell many other words. Daily 5 Writing

  10. How you can help your child become a reader: • Read to your child daily. • Have your child read to you. • Take your child to the library. • Read signs and other text with your child at home and in the community. • Model your love of reading!

  11. Homework • 20 minutes of reading daily. • Enrichment Activities – Optional/encouraged opportunity for students to practice the skills they have learned in class.
