  1. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule Objective: To write equations that represent functions

  2. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule You can see how the value of one variable depends on another. When you see the pattern you can write a rule. Example 1: p. 262 You can estimate the temperature by counting the number of chirps o f the snowy tree cricket. The outdoor temperature is about 40°F more than one fourth the number of chirps the cricket makes in one minute. What is a fn rule that represents this situation.

  3. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule Example 1: p. 262 You can estimate the temperature by counting the number of chirps o f the snowy tree cricket. The outdoor temperature is about 40°F more than one fourth the number of chirps the cricket makes in one minute. What is a fn rule that represents this situation. Choose variables. Make a model to see pattern. T: temperature, n: number of chirps T 40 ¼ n

  4. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule • Example 2: p. 263 A concert seating plan is shown below. Reserved seating is sold out. Total Revenue from ticket sales will depend on the number of general seating tickets sold. Write a rule and find the maximum total revenue. • Choose variables. Make a model to see pattern. • R: revenue, n: number of general seating tickets • Reserved seating $25, 10 rows with 12 seats per row • General Seating: $10, 30 rows, 15 seats per row. • Total rev is general seating plus reserved seating • How do you calculate money from gen seating? Reserved seating?

  5. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule • Example 2: R: revenue, n: number of general seating tickets • Reserved seating $25, 10 rows with 12 seats per row • General Seating: $10, 30 rows, 15 seats per row. • Total rev is general seating plus reserved seating • How do you calculate money from gen seating? Reserved seating?

  6. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule • Example 3: P. 264 Write a function rule for the area of a rectangle whose length is 5 ft more than its width. What is the area of the rectangle when its width is 9 ft. • A: area L : length W: width • ONLY 2 variables: one independent, one dependent. • From the problem I can express L as a function of width. • L = so A = L W, replace L in terms of w. Clean it up (simplify) Use the rule to answer question

  7. 4-5 Writing a Function Rule • HW p. 265 9 – 24 every third
