  1. Industry-based Biorefineries IETS Industrial Energy-related Technologies and Systems IEA Implementing Agreement Isabel Cabrita IETS Vice-Chair

  2. Biomass of different origins Industry-based Biorefineries • The concept of Biorefinery CONVERSION PROCESS Materials, Fibres Energy In Pulp & Paper Biomass & Black Liquor Chemicals Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  3. International Cooperation Industry-based Biorefineries • Areas for international cooperation • Exchange of information on the optimization of energy efficiency in existing plants, to convert internal biomass and black liquor to energy and bioproducts • Implementation of joint projects leading to engine fuels production connected to a pulp or pulp and paper mill • R&D connected to pulp mill biorefineries to produce new materials and chemicals • R&D associated to the integration of CO2 capture and sequestration at lower costs Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  4. Industry-based Biorefineries • General objective • provide a sound basis for the efficient integration of biorefinery concept in different industrial sectors where biomass is used as resource or biomass based waste is available, which could be used for fuel/energy production, also considering opportunities of bio-products generation with added value. The work to be developed has a technology component as well as a systems approach. • Synergies are considered with other Implementing Agreements, namely the Bioenergy, aiming at combining the knowledge of industrial technologies with energy efficiency, and the biomass conversion processes, • Providing a global forum for participants to exchange information, disseminate knowledge gained and lessons learned in an atmosphere that promotes interaction and collaboration (not a conference format) and the formation of collaborative working groups; • Encouraging participants to engage in truly collaborative, value-adding research and development activities and to promote demonstrations; • Focusing the research efforts by regularly updating a prioritized list of research needs and knowledge gaps; • Involving industry and communicating progress apart from industry, government representatives and other appropriate people. Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  5. Industry-based Biorefineries • Work Scope • The scope of Annex X is the integration of biorefinery concept in industry, integrating with an existing plant (e.g. pulp and paper mill) or other, either individual or a complex of industrial companies • It includes economic evaluation, energy efficiency and technical integration of processes that provide energy and higher value-added products • Examples of Technologies to be considered • Biomass gasification, including waste and black liquor gasification • Pyrolysis • Biogas production and integration • Combustion • Gas clean-up processes, including CCS techniques (e.g. using microalgae for CO2 fixation producing hydrocarbons and/or hydrogen) • Fuels and chemicals synthesis • Also included in the scope is the impact of the above technologies on the environment Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  6. Industry-based Biorefineries • Research Strategy • Collaborative work to identify areas needed for further research, building up multi-discipline groups to tackle at the same time different aspects of the biorefinery concept and its application. • All countries are included as part of the team, starting as a zero fund Annex, with the mission to define a roadmap leading to a final goal with specific work programmes, budgets and human resources put together, as individual projects under the scope of the Annex. Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  7. Industry-based Biorefineries • Projects and division of work • Under the scope of this Annex, projects will be implemented as teams and work programmes are established, with the participation of two countries or more • In this first year, all countries are considered to participate in the Annex, aiming at identifying needs and gaps to structure a roadmap and define a list of individual projects for implementation • Tools • In this first year, there will be national workshops and discussions, industry consultations, and networking by electronic needs. • After projects are defined with allocation of funds, human and material resources, methodologies are defined for each individual project, with task leaders, and coordination is guaranteed through the Annex Manager. Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  8. Industry-based Biorefineries • Organization of work and meetings • Each project will have its own programme, time schedule and deliverables, and project leaders are responsible for its implementation and execution. Periodic meetings will take place between the Annex Manager and project leaders for management optimization • Semi-annual meetings • Publication of Minutes • Distribution of presentations • Tour of relevant facilities • A methodology for conducting the semi-annual meetings - updated regularly • Cooperation with other Annexes and other Implementing Agreements • Communication efforts Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  9. Industry-based Biorefineries • Results • Products, deliverables • Deliverables are specific to each project as they can be different in nature, going from technological installations to publications and reports • yearly will be produced a detailed report with projects outcomes, presented to the Executive Committee of the Implementing Agreement, which will include synergies with other Implementing Agreements and other Annexes Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  10. Industry-based Biorefineries • Program Annex plan • Considering that flexibility should be ensured to successfully implement new projects, relevant to IETS strategy and objectives, a list of projects and the scientific and technical detailed descriptions will be added, annexed to the body of the present Annex, advancing at this stage two initiatives: • Integration of thermochemical conversion processes in pulp mill based biorefineries - Project Leader – Gerard Closset (USA) - Energy and biofuel production in an integrated technology complex - Project Leader – Isabel Cabrita (Portugal) Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  11. Industry-based Biorefineries Energy and biofuel production in an integrated technology complex Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  12. Industry-based Biorefineries • Identification of critical "milestone" events • At the end of 2008, roadmaps should be presented for both initiatives with allocation of funding, material and human resources Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair

  13. Industry-based Biorefineries Thank you for your attention Isabel Cabrita IEA - IETS Vice-Chair
