SWS SSP Technology Initiative 2011Holroyd SchoolMary Brooksbank SchoolChalmers Road School Morning Circle Template Activities: ChooseIt Maker Teaching Guide The following document is a guide for teachers who use the morning circle template. It provides information about teaching strategies, questions for assessment and links to curriculum to focus the activity on the learning outcomes for students. This document contains samples of outcomes taken from the K-6 Syllabus and the Stages 4-5 and Stage 6 Life Skills Syllabuses. Included are samples of appropriate outcomes, however in most cases there may be more than those listed. Outcomes have been selected from random stages, either K-6, 7-10, or 11-12.

Template Activities: Choose it Today the Weather is? 1 Choice : From Choose it Template 2011 • Teaching Strategies • Model selection of appropriate symbol that represents the weather for the day. • Support with physical , verbal and gestural prompts as needed from least to most. Reduce prompting as skills develop. • Support with sensory materials. • Encourage verbalisations. • Assessment: • Can the students recognise the weather PCS. • Can the student select the symbol that represents the weather of the day. • Does the students respond to the sensory materials that support the learning. • Does the students respond to the rewards page. Links to Curriculum K-6 ENGLISH: TES1.1 Communicates with peers and known adults in informal situations and structured activities dealing briefly with familiar topics. HSIE: ENS1.6 Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between environments and people. Life Skills 7-12 ENGLISH (Stg 6):1.6 Gives information, comments, asks questions spontaneously or on request. SCIENCE (Stg 6): 1.4 Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of various climate and weather within the local environment, across Australia and globally.

Reduce prompting as skills develop. • Link learning to a calendar. • Link learning to phonics skills. • Assessment: • Can the students select the colour and/or word for the day of the week. • Can the student read and/or understand the days of the year? • Do students attempt to verbalise to beginning sound . • Does the students respond to the rewards page. Links to Curriculum K-6 ENGLISH: RES1.5 Demonstrates developing reading skills to read short, predictable written texts on familiar topics. MATHEMATICS: WMES1.5 Links mathematical ideas and makes connections with, and generalisations about, existing knowledge and understanding in relation to Early Stage 1 content. Life Skills 7-12 ENGLISH (Stg 6): LS.5 Recognises, interprets and responds to written information. MATHEMATICS (Stg 4/5): MLS.5 A student responds to the language of measurement in everyday contexts.

Reduce prompting as skills develop. • Support with mirror image of student to help select correct photo. • Assessment: • Can the students recognise a photo of themselves. • San students name the other photo choice. • Does the students respond to the rewards page. • Does the students make verbalisations in respond to hearing their own name. Links to Curriculum K-6 ENGLISH: DMS1.2 Recalls past experiences in making decisions. HSIE: CUS1.3 Identifies customs, practices, symbols, languages and traditions of their family and other families. Life Skills 7-12 ENGLISH (Stg 6): 4.1 Recognises individual photographs, pictures, symbols or words for personal use. CREATIVE ARTS (Stg 6): 4.1 Explores a variety of ideas and subject matter, such as people, living things, places, spaces and events that can be represented in paintings, drawings, photographs and print.

Reduce prompting as skills develop. • Emphasise turn taking. • Assessment: • Can the students recognise the PCS of activities? • Are they able to wait their turn? • Are they able to recognise when it is their turn? Links to Curriculum K-6 ENGLISH: RES1.5 Demonstrates developing reading skills to read short, predictable written texts on familiar topics. PDHPE: COS3.1 Communicates confidently in a variety of situations. Life Skills 7-12 HSIE (Stg 4/5): Explores the concept of time and chronology. MATHEMATICS Stg (4/5): MLS.2 Recognises and uses the language of time.

Reduce prompting as skills develop. • Make a connection to a calendar. • Link learning to beginning phonics skills. • Assessment: • Can the students select the word for the month of the year. • Can the student read and/or understand the days of the year? • Do students attempt to verbalise to beginning sound . • Does the students respond to the rewards page. Links to Curriculum K-6 ENGLISH: RES1.7 Demonstrates an emerging awareness that written and visual texts convey meaning and recognises that there are different kinds of texts that serve different purposes. ENGLISH: TS1.2 Interacts in more extended ways with less teacher intervention, makes increasingly confident oral presentations and generally listens attentively. Life Skills 7-12 ENGLISH (Stg 4/5): LS.1 Responds to auditory cues in a range of contexts. LANGUAGE (Stg 4/5): LS.MLC.4 A student explores ways in which meaning in conveyed in written language.

Reduce prompting as skills develop. • Support with sensory materials. • Encourage verbalisations. • Assessment: • Can the students recognise the season PCS. • Can the student select the symbol that represents the current season. • Does the students respond to the sensory materials that support the learning. • Does the students respond to the rewards page? Links to Curriculum K-6 SCIENCE: ESS1.6 Identifies and describes ways in which people and other living things depend upon the earth and its environments. PDHPE: PSS2.5 Uses a range of problem-solving strategies. Life Skills 7-12 ENGLISH (Stg 6): 3.2 Listens and responds to verbal messages and associated visual cues. MATHEMATICS(Stg 6): 3.4 Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of days of the week, months, seasons and years.
