  2. Motivation 66x Growth New paradigm shift: Smartphone Dramatic growth of mobile data traffic ※ Google had failed to provide VoIP over wireless multi-hop networks in Mountain View, US in 2006 due to low VoIP capacity over the networks.
  3. Current Situation Currently, Korea is the first in the wired Internet, but far behind USA, Japan and European countries in the wireless Internet and smartphone related software. KAIST 15 faculty members (Depts. of CS, EE, and Management Science) proposed a project on this topic to KCC(방송통신위원회), Spring 2009: KCC: cellular network provider (KT and SK Telecom)’s Job KT and SK Telecom: few interest in public wireless data networks and services Municipalities and customers: strong interest in public wireless data networks and services Who is going to handle with the dramatic growth of mobile data traffic and services? A global problem we need to solve Try on KAIST campus first and spread its solution globally

  6. Meta-scenario A student can attend seminar and class in real-time using smart phone any place, any time on campus. Free mobile VoIP and real-time video on campus even in a moving car Smartphone with projector and camera enables people to give lectures and take live videos any place, any time on campus

  8. Objective Final Target 1st Target VoIP and Video capacity 10 times enhancement with competitive cost over current technologies
  9. Plan 2010. 7: Prototyping phase (1st Target) Testbed setup (at Dept of CS) with 802.11n demonstrating VoIP, Video, and et al. for smartphone 2013: Wireless Multi-hop Network (1 Gbps) buildup and et al. for smartphone on KAIST campus 2014: Commercialization
