  4. Rule # 10 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM… • by determining how a word functions as a part of speech • Example • Identify the part of speech of each underlined word or word group in this sentence. -The roly-poly puppies frequently stumble and fall.

  5. Rule # 9 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM • By turning fragments and run-ons into complete sentences • By knowing the difference between a sentence, a phrase, and a clause • Examples • Pleased by the applause of the audience the violinist played an encore. Fix the run-on.

  6. Rule # 8 Thou Shalt CHEW thy GUM • By making subjects and verbs agree in number, person, and gender • By making pronouns and antecedents agree in number, person, and gender • Examples - Read the statement. Identify the error in agreement. • The store, the hotel, and the airport is all in a ten-mile radius of the beach. • To apply for the scholarship, a student must submit at least four samples of their work.
